Passport Challenge winners named

On Monday, November 3, Marilyn Thompson, associate provost, human resources presented prizes to the winners of the Waterloo Amazing Get Up and Go Passport Challenge.

There were 8 teams competing in the challenge, which ran from October 21 to 31.

The winners were:

  • MMM: Making Me Marvelous: Verna Keller (first individual to finish)
  • Team HR: Nellie Gomes, Paula Schnurr, Sean Oates, Mandy McDermid, Ljiljana Skobo, Becky Grant (first team to finish)

IEW continues with Languages Fair

International Education Week continues today with the Renison Language Fair, which will be held in Renison University’s Great Hall extension from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Language Fair is open to faculty, staff and students, and attendees will have the opportunity to explore the options for improving their language and cultural knowledge that Renison has available through its credit and non-credit courses. You can learn more about how to earn academic minors in applied language, East Asian studies and Studies in Islam, as well as certificates or diplomas in a wide variety of languages. Attendees can also learn how to say a few key phrases in each language on display, have their names written out in different langauges, hear about international exchange opportunities within each department, and enter their names in a draw for door prizes.

Other IEW events happening today include:

  • A muay thai tri-it session organized by Athletics
  • An International Research Opportunities event that includes a panel discussion with faculty and graduate students
  • An Alumni Abroad panel, where alumni who studied abroad while completing their degree will share their experiences.
  • The UW Recreation Committee will be leading a tour of the international section of the Beechwood Zehrs as part of their International Grocery Tour series.
  • The International and Canadian Student Network (ICSN) will be hosting a Babble Café in the Grad House from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Library to extend hours and other notes

To accommodate students as they prepare for exams, the Library will be extending its hours from Monday, November 23 to Friday, December 19. The Davis Centre library will be open 24 hours a day except on Sundays, when it will be closed from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. The Dana Porter library will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. every day. During this time, service desks and related services will be closed at regular times (for Dana Porter that is 11:00 p.m. and for the Davis Centre that is midnight). On the last day of extended hours, the Davis Centre will close at midnight and Dana Porter will close at 11:00 p.m. Check the Library’s website for full opening and closing details.

The University of Waterloo Staff Association (UWSA) is holding a craft sale on Wednesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 20 in the Student Life Centre’s multipurpose room. Handcrafted items by Waterloo staff and retirees will be on display. Drop by for a treat and a beverage.
