You and You and You @ Waterloo Day
Student ambassadors, staff members and other volunteers delivered a warm welcome for 5,793 visitors on You @ Waterloo Day Saturday.
"We had beautiful weather and a record number of visitors to boot!" writes Visitors Centre Manager Andrea Santi.
Ambassadors like those pictured above conducted more than 70 campus tours to upwards of 1,400 visitors - prospective students and their families.
Math dean nominating committee seeks input
"Pursuant to Dean Goulden’s decision not to renew his mandate after 30 June 2015, this is to inform you that the Dean of Mathematics Nominating Committee has been constituted under the terms of Policy 45 and has held its first meeting," says a memo circulated to the Mathematics community last week.
"Over the next month, committee members intend to consult broadly, possibly including individual interviews and/or meetings with small groups within the faculty."
"Notwithstanding, you are invited to convey your views on matters concerning the deanship to any member of the nominating committee (identified below). The committee especially invites you to consider the following questions and seeks your input and feedback:
- What are the issues, challenges and opportunities facing the Faculty of Mathematics?
- What are your aspirations for the faculty?
- What advice do you have for the nominating committee as to the background, credentials, qualifications and leadership style that should be sought in the next dean?
- Do you have any suggestions as to individuals to whom we should speak about this opportunity?
If you prefer to respond in writing, your submission should be directed to the committee secretary, Alice Raynard (Secretariat and Office of General Counsel, 3060 Needles Hall; araynard@uwaterloo.ca), or to Gerri Woodford, an executive search consultant supporting the committee (Odgers Berndtson, 200 Bay Street, Suite 3150, Royal Bank Plaza, South Tower, Toronto, Ontario, M5J 2J3; waterloomath@odgersberndtson.ca). Your confidential input and feedback will be very important in shaping the position profile and informing the direction of the search."
Comments are due no later than June 13 and will be held in strict confidence by the committee.

Canadian Cancer Society honours researcher
The Canadian Cancer Society presented a professor from the University of Waterloo with its Award for Excellence in Cancer Research for his pioneering work in cancer prevention.
Professor David Hammond, of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at Waterloo, is the recipient of the William E. Rawls Prize for the remarkable impact he has made at an early stage in his career. The prize is given to a young investigator whose work has led to important advances in cancer control within the past decade.
Recognized internationally as a leading expert in tobacco-control research, Professor Hammond has helped shape tobacco legislation in Canada and around the world. His specific focus on tobacco packaging and warning labels has informed restrictions on advertising and marketing in a range of countries, and is used to design health warnings for cigarette packages that reach hundreds of millions of people each year.
Professor Hammond regularly acts as an advisor for tobacco-control policies, and has served as an expert witness in legal challenges from tobacco companies in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. He was an advisor to the World Health Organization on the world’s first public health treaty.
"The University of Waterloo is immensely proud of Professor Hammond’s contributions to cancer prevention policies and programs on both the national and international level," said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo. "His transformational research has unparalleled potential to impact health at the population level, and most importantly, save lives."
Professor Hammond recently received the Canada’s Premier Young Researcher award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and is a past recipient of the Canadian Medical Association Journal’s Top Canadian Achievements in Health Research Award for his work in tobacco control. He has appeared in more than 140 publications, including The Lancet and the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
