Lloyd Axworthy named St. Paul's chancellor
St. Paul’s University College has announced the appointment of Lloyd Axworthy as the institution's first chancellor.
Currently president and vice-chancellor at the University of Winnipeg, Axworthy has had a distinguished career in academia, and is recognized as a Canadian statesman and respected politician. For 27 years, Axworthy served in public office, six of which he served in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and 21 in the federal parliament. He held several cabinet positions during that time, including Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has received international recognition for his work in the advancement of the human security concept, particularly the Ottawa Treaty, a global treaty banning anti-personnel land mines.
“It is a great honour to join the close-knit St. Paul’s community—a place that feels familiar, with its strong history and commitment to social justice and to nurturing in students a sense of purpose and place in the world,” said Axworthy. “I share St. Paul’s mission to reach and include a wide diversity of students and to offer relevant, community-focused programs and services.”
Upon leaving public office in 2000, Axworthy became Director and CEO of the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia prior to joining the University of Winnipeg in 2004. In 2010, he was made an honourary member of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba and given an Ojibwe name, Waapshki Pinaysee Inini, which translates to White Thunderbird Man.
"We are thrilled that he took such great interest in our mission and has accepted to be part of the St. Paul’s community,” said Graham Brown, principal of St. Paul’s. “We are looking forward to the impact that such a distinguished humanitarian brings as our inaugural chancellor.”
Axworthy’s work at the University of Winnipeg has focused on campus renewal and its surrounding urban community with the view to making post-secondary education more accessible to students who are from the inner-city, Aboriginal, recent immigrants, or refugees. He has also expanded the university’s outreach in the areas of Aboriginal education, environmental studies and human rights.
Axworthy was the Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Lecturer at the University of Waterloo campus in 2012. The installation will take place in the fall of 2014.

Campus parking lots to get a facelift
Parking Services has started a process to reconstruct several parking lots around the main campus.
An engineering study was recently done to prioritize the lots needing work, and according to Tom Galloway of Parking Services, the plan is to rehabilitate select parking lots on campus every year for the next number of years, with the construction costs to be paid for from the reserve fund created by user parking fees.
For 2014, Parking Lots S (across from Mackenzie King Village), K (across from Village I) and N (across from Parking Lot L and the Central Services building) will be reconstructed. And it is a reconstruction - asphalt and curbs are being removed, new drainage will be installed, and the lots will be topped with new aggregate and new asphalt.
Yesterday the contractor began work in lots S and K. Reconstruction efforts in those lots should be completed by the end of July. Around that time, work on Parking lot N will commence, with a completion date set for early September.
"Permit holders in S and K have been informed and signs have been erected," says Galloway. "They have have been informed of nearby and alternative lots they can use during construction."
Parking Lot N is a Pay and Display lot, so when work begins, users will be encouraged to use other pay and display lots on campus.
Convocation by the numbers and other notes
"Last week marked the University of Waterloo’s 108th convocation," writes Dana Ciak of Alumni Relations. "Hundreds of graduates crossed the stage to receive their degree, beginning a new chapter in their lives as alumni of the University of Waterloo. These new graduates are now part of the UWaterloo alumni community which is a family of over 169,000. Welcome to the club our newest alumni!"
Alumni Relations is pleased to share this fun infographic (click to enlarge) that shows just what goes into making convocation a day to remember.
