Warriors mourn Tyler Norrie

A statement from the Athletics department.

It is with great sadness that the University of Waterloo Warriors announce the death of men’s hockey player Tyler Norrie.

Norrie, a native of Simcoe, Ontario, passed away suddenly on June 3.

Norrie had just completed his first year with the Warriors, studying in the Geography and Environment program. He was 22 years old.

Brian Bourque, head coach of the Warriors hockey team said:

“I am extremely saddened by the death of Tyler Norrie. My thoughts, and those of the entire University of Waterloo community, are with the Norrie family at this difficult time.

“Tyler was exactly the type of person that coaches look for. He was loved by his teammates. He showed up every day with a hard-working positive attitude. His hockey sense was great and he was determined to have a positive impact on the team.

“Last year was Tyler’s first year with our program and he developed throughout the season to a point where he became a regular in our line-up and we were confident his role was going to continue to grow over his career.

“Last year we did an activity where players took turns providing the quote of the day. Tyler’s quote – from American author Og Mandino – exemplified his personality: ‘Always do your best.  What you plant now, you will harvest later.’”

Last season, Norrie played in nine games with the Warriors, scoring three goals. Before joining the Warriors, Norrie spent three seasons with the Brantford/Caledonia franchise in the GOJHL, amassing 96 points in 146 games.

“It’s clear from the tributes paid to Tyler Norrie that he was an extremely well-liked student with a real flair for Hockey – he will be missed,” said Jeff Casello, associate dean, undergraduate in the Faculty of Environment. “The Faculty of Environment mourns the loss of a hard-working young man and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

The visitation will be held today from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Jason Smith Funeral Chapel in Simcoe. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Clark Canning officiating. Those wishing to donate in his memory are asked to consider Camp Trillium Rainbow Lake.

Pharmacist body honours student, grad

Waterloo pharmacy student Sarah Johnson has been named the 2014 Student of Distinction Award winner by the Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA). The award is presented to a graduating pharmacy student from one of Ontario’s two schools of pharmacy, who has exhibited strong leadership qualities and a commitment to advancing the profession of pharmacy throughout their career.

Currently a fourth-year student at the School of Pharmacy, Johnson is particularly interested in diabetes care, transitions in care and interprofessional collaboration. Also passionate about giving back to the community, she has volunteered at the Grand River Hospital as a dialysis visitor and emergency room volunteer. She hopes to practice in a rural or northern community upon graduation.

Additionally, one of the members of the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy's inaugural graduating class, Heather Foley, will receive the Outstanding New Practitioner Award.

Foley has spent two years as a clinical pharmacist and has achieved a number of her career goals, including setting up a methadone and medication review program at a community pharmacy, aiding in the development of a successful medication reconciliation program at three hospitals, developing a process within a family health team to ensure medication is taken safely after hospital discharge, and hiring and mentoring pharmacy students.

She is currently employed in the roles of adjunct clinical assistant professor and regional clinical coordinator at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy; clinical pharmacist at the Chatham Kent Family Health Team; and lead pharmacist at the We Care Pharmacy, a retail pharmacy owned and operated by the Windsor Regional Hospital.

Johnson and Foley will receive their awards at the Association’s annual conference in Niagara Falls on Saturday, June 21.
