Nominations open for 3M teaching fellowships

The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is actively encouraging nominations for the 3M National Teaching Fellowships, which reward teaching excellence and educational leadership.

The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M Canada first partnered in 1986 to recognize “exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities.” Up to ten Fellowships are selected annually.

The STLHE has details for preparing nomination packages on their website.

Nominations must be submitted to the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education by Sunday, August 31, 2014.

Anyone considering submitting a nomination is invited to contact Trevor Holmes at extension 33408 for advice.

Feridun Hamdullahpur drops the puck at the Engineering hockey game.
Engineers keep their sticks on the ice

By Laura Janzen.

On Tuesday, July 8 in the Columbia Ice Fields Arena, the Engineering Faculty and Engineering Society faced off in a hockey game that has become a repeat affair.

The stakes were high, as last year’s match had been taken by the faculty 8-3.

President Feridun Hamdullahpur got the game going with a ceremonial puck drop. The president, a professor of mechanical engineering, is also a member of the Engineering faculty.

In the end, the faculty secured victory for the second consecutive year, but with a much-reduced 6-5 margin. Word has it EngSoc is already hungry for another rematch. Game on!

Discover a world of fun

by Katharine Tuerke. This is the latest in a series of #UWCommunity weekly features that highlight Waterloo in the community.

Mad Science, magic, stunt dogs and hands-on activities are just some of the free and exciting events at this year’s Discovery Square in downtown Kitchener.

In partnership with the Faculty of Science, Discovery Square celebrates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) through interactive demonstrations geared for children ages 5 to 12.

Early education experiences in science, technology, math and engineering are shaping today’s children and youth into the leaders of tomorrow.

UWaterloo's Science Outreach program increases awareness of the importance and value of science to society, and highlights the contributions that our University makes to scientific understanding, in a way that is fun and interactive for kids.

“I think Discovery Square is an awesome experience for children,” says Cory Bluhm, manager of downtown development. “We have such a diverse tech community in downtown Kitchener and I think it’s great that we can showcase this science and technology to the next generation.”

Discovery Square will take place every Tuesday evening in July from 6 - 8 p.m. at Kitchener City Hall’s Civic Square, rain or shine. Admission is free.

For more information about Discovery Square and the weekly events please visit Kitchener Events.

Farewell, fasting, and other Friday finalities

Friends and colleagues of Mark Walker are being invited to a farewell party in his honour as he leaves to take up the position of Registrar at Simon Fraser University. The event will take place at 3:00 p.m. in EIT 3142 on Monday, July 14. Speeches will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Fast-A-Thon poster. In honour of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar that began on June 28, the University of Waterloo Muslim Students' Association (UMSA) is holding its first-ever Fast-A-Thon, which will take place on Thursday, July 17.

"Fast-A-Thon is an occasion wherein students on campus are invited to fast along with Muslims on the day of the 17th of July during this - the blessed month of Ramadan," writes Tarek Chammah of UMSA. "Students fasting are asked to donate the money they saved on food that day to impoverished orphans at the Fast-A-Thon evening event starting at 7:30 p.m., which includes a free dinner as part of the program, as
well as musical and spoken word performances, in addition to engaging speakers."

Students who register for the Fast-A-Thon will receive details about the event location in their confirmation email.

"The day and evening program are meant to bring attention to the plight of orphans and the hungry, who often have to "fast" though not by choice!" writes Chammah. "Ramadan is a special occasion when Muslims fast in part to experience what it feels like to go hungry and therefore emphasize with the poor, homeless, and those not well off like us."

The Fast-A-Thon website has more information about the event and how to register.

Plant Operations is reminding drivers, cyclists and pedestrians that the Needles Hall service road will be closed until Wednesday, July 16 as infrastructure work continues on the Ring Road in front of the Needles Hall expansion. Parking Lot D will be closed for the same time period. Drivers who usually part in Lot D should use Lot M for parking.

Finally, on a personal note, I will be on vacation until July 28 and the Daily Bulletin will be in the steady hands of my colleagues in Marketing and Strategic Communications until then. Please contact Christina Pace about any Daily Bulletin-related matters, or continue to send messages about events, story ideas, and so on to bulletin@uwaterloo.ca, as that account is being monitored in my absence. See you in two weeks!
