Waterloo opens Korea alumni chapter
President Feridun Hamdullahpur joined a full house of alumni in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday, October 16 to celebrate the official launch of the university’s Korea alumni chapter.
The president, accompanied by Ken McGillivray, Vice-President, Advancement, Jason Coolman, Associate Vice-President, Alumni Relations, and other delegates from the university, had the pleasure of welcoming His Excellency, David Chatterson, Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea and Andrea Clements, First Secretary, Trade Commissioner, Market Access to the event.
Hosted in Schofield Hall at the Embassy of Canada, the creation of this alumni chapter is the result of collaborative efforts between Waterloo’s Office of Advancement and five alumni who now serve as founding members – Taeho Kang (BMath ‘05), Youngjoon Won (BMath ‘03), Goyoung Moon (PhD ‘01), Jaeboong Choi (MSc ‘93, PhD ‘97), and James Won-Ki Hong (PhD ‘91) All are pictured above with Jason Coolman and Feridun Hamdullahpur on the left and Ken McGillivray and Hong Kong Office Director Eva Cairns on the right.
During his remarks, President Hamdullahpur spoke about Waterloo’s global outreach and how vital it is for the university to have strong connections to and networks amongst its alumni chapters. “As a source of important strategic partnerships, alumni chapters help fuel Waterloo’s goal to be recognized as one of the world’s top innovation universities,” he said. “By working together, marrying the university’s powerful reputation with local knowledge, talent, and opportunities, we can also help Waterloo’s alumni around the world help one another to grow their businesses, find new opportunities, and partner with one another for mutual success.”
The Korea alumni chapter joins eight other Waterloo chapters that encompass alumni living in Western Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. With more than 160,000 Waterloo alumni worldwide, Alumni Relations is continuously working to diversify its network of alumni chapters. Stay tuned to find out if one is starting up in your area and how you can get involved.

Online expense claim project to talk privacy
A project aimed at better managing expense claims for employees and students is hosting a Privacy Colloquium on Wednesday, December 4, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in M3 1006. A reception will follow.
The Online Expense Claim Project’s members have been looking at various ways to improve the expense claim process on campus, and the university is currently considering the adoption of online expense claim processing using Concur, a US-based company.
As part of the consultation process, the project has organized the information session on the privacy aspects of going ahead with Concur’s services. Two speakers are scheduled to deliver remarks: Jim Turk, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, and Fred Carter, Senior Policy and Technology Advisor of the Ontario Privacy Commissioner’s Office. Following their presentations, there will be a question and answer session with a panel that includes the two speakers and other experts.
Karen Jack, the university’s Privacy Officer, will be sending a list of questions to Jim Turk and Fred Carter in advance of the colloquium, asking that they be addressed as part of their presentation. Jack is inviting the university community to suggest questions and concerns of their own by filling out an online form by Tuesday, October 22. The usual CAS login is required to view and fill out the form.
Be sure to mark your calendars for December 4. More details will be made available closer to the event date.
Wellbeing collaboration wins award
A community wellbeing initiative has received a 2013 Impact Award at this year's Community Indicators Consortium (CIC) Impact Summit in Chicago.
The City of Guelph and the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW), housed at the University of Waterloo, were selected by the Community Indicators Consortium leadership to receive the award, which celebrates projects that demonstrate the power of indicators to drive positive community change.
Bryan Smale, director of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, based in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, said, “Our work with the City of Guelph demonstrates the impact of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing in contributing to meaningful change in individual and community wellbeing, so we are extremely pleased to be recognized with the CIC Impact Award.”
The 2013 Impact Award will be formally presented to Guelph City Council at its meeting on October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
Student Design Centre named for former dean
The Faculty of Engineering will name the world-class Student Design Centre in honour of former dean, Adel Sedra (right).
The centre, which was completed in 2010, will be named the Sedra Student Design Centre at a ceremony in Engineering 5 today.
Sedra served as dean of engineering at Waterloo from 2003 to 2012. A specialist in microelectronics, Professor Sedra is the co-author of three textbooks, including Microelectronic Circuits (with K.C. Smith), now in its seventh edition, with more than two million copies in print in 10 languages. Next to the Bible, it’s Oxford University Press’s best-selling book.
During his nine years as dean of engineering, Waterloo introduced its world-renowned programs in mechatronics engineering, management engineering and nanotechnology. Sedra played a leading role in strategic planning at Waterloo. He spearheaded efforts to build leading new facilities including Engineering 5, Engineering 6, the Energy Research Centre and the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre.
One of the new facilities completed during his tenure as dean was the 20,000-square-foot Student Design Centre, the largest facility of its kind in North America. The centre is home to more than 20 teams of students working on design projects including a new Formula One car, the autonomous robot, the flying quadrotor and the hybrid vehicle.
Professor Pearl Sullivan, dean of engineering, will unveil an interactive kiosk by MappedIn and P.O.D. Designs that will illustrate the impact of the Sedra Student Design Centre to all visitors.
Strike a pose for a great cause
Undergraduates in the Photography Club, which is supported by the Federation of Students, are hosting an event on Tuesday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the SLC Vendor Alley for people interested in having their photo taken," writes Jacqueline Martinz. "The skilled photographers in the club will provide anyone within the University community with a stunning keepsake for any price they’re willing to pay, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the United Way KW."
Individuals on campus are also able to contribute to the University of Waterloo’s United Way Campaign.
Information on how to give is available online.

Gairdner Foundation Lectures today
Today, the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Science will be hosting Gairdner International Award recipient Professor Kim Nasmyth (above) from the University of Oxford.
He will deliver two public lectures – one will explore his personal scientific journey and the other, his research discovery.
"Learn about Professor Nasmyth’s discovery of the mechanism by which the DNA in our chromosomes is held together," writes Katharine Tuerke of the Faculty of Science. "His work has profound importance for our understanding of cell division and provides insight into how errors can cause cancer and other genetic diseases."
At 10:00 a.m. in EIT 3142 this morning, Professor Nasmyth will present "My scientific journey; a lecture for young scientists" to grade 10-12 high school students, who will then participate in workshops and tours of the Faculty of Science.
This afternoon, Nasmyth will deliver the 2013 Gairdner Foundation Research Lecture, entitled "How are chromosomes held together?" at 1:00 p.m. in OPT 1129.
All are welcome to attend either lecture.
The Canada Gairdner International Awards are given in recognition of outstanding international medical research. Award winners then travel to universities across Canada to share their work and inspire youth to pursue careers in health sciences.
