President signs MOU Down Under

This is an excerpt of a piece that appears on The President's Office website.

Ed Byrne and Feridun Hamdullahpur sign the MOU extension. On Wednesday, July 24, President Feridun Hamdullahpur led a delegation from the University of Waterloo to Australia’s Monash University, where the president and his Monash University counterpart, Vice-Chancellor Ed Byrne, signed an extension to the two universities’ Memorandum of Understanding, extending the globe-spanning partnership well into the future.

President Hamdullahpur and Vice-Chancellor Byrne hailed the MOU extension as an outstanding example of international and interdisciplinary research collaboration.

“The University of Waterloo is delighted that Monash University, which shares so much in common with Waterloo, will continue to be a key member of our global network of research partnerships,” said President Hamdullahpur.

Monash University was founded in 1958 – just one year after the establishment of the University of Waterloo – by Sir John Monash, a civil engineer who also served Australia with distinction during the First World War as a senior army officer.

The University of Waterloo’s point-person on internationalization, Associate Vice-President, international, Nello Angerilli, notes that like Waterloo, Monash is known as a highly innovative upstart on the international scene.

“These universities were founded in the same era, they share a reputation for innovation, and they’re both thoroughly entrepreneurial not only in terms of their activities, but in terms of their organizational cultures,” Angerilli said. “It’s a perfect match, and enables both institutions to add serious depth and reach to their international portfolios.”

Bicycle locker pilot project coming this fall

Parking Services is acquiring two heavy-duty bicycle lockers and will be deploying them on campus this fall.

The secure lockers (pictured above in a promotional photo) are produced by CycleSafe, a company that builds a variety of bike racks and storage units. According to the company’s promotional materials, CycleSafe’s lockers are fire resistant and tough enough to withstand the winds of a Level 1 hurricane.

“We’re doing this as a trial to see what level of interest there is,” says Tom Galloway, director of Parking Services.

The lockers will supplement and not replace any current bicycle rack on campus.

Members of the university community will be able to rent space in the locker for a $10 monthly fee. The method of determining how the four spots will be filled is yet to be determined.

According to Parking Services, locker users will be provided with combination locks. The codes on the locks will be changed after a user stops renting locker space.

The proposed locations for the four ProPark lockers are in the vicinity of Engineering or Environment, but the final decision has not yet been made. In the chosen area, a pair of lockers, which can each hold two bicycles, will be located side-by-side.

Anyone interested in learning more about the lockers can contact Parking Services.
