Three Minute Thesis campus finals today
With the faculty heats behind them, the finalists for the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) will compete today for the top Waterloo spot and the chance to represent our institution at the provincial finals.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final competition is happening today from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre.
The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) is a university-wide competition for research-based masters thesis and doctoral students at Waterloo. Competitors have 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience.
The first place winner receives a $1,000 prize and moves on to the provincial competition. The runner-up receives a $500 prize.
The finalists are:
- Sierra Palaniyandi, Applied Health Sciences (School of Public Health and Health Systems), "Mercury and Selenium in Inuit Traditional Foods";
- Michael MacKinley, Applied Health Sciences (School of Public Health and Health Systems), "The Interaction Between Early- and Late-Life Exposures in Predicting Cognitive Resilience in Older Adulthood";
- K. Yourie Kim, Arts (Psychology), "Discovering Entrepreneurial Intent: Application of an Expanded Model of Career Choice Motivation";
- Joseph Buscemi, Arts (History), "Protect and Survive?: The Recently Declassified History of Britain's Cold War Nuclear Survival Plans";
- Ali Haghi, Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering), "Fast Wireless Internet for Everyone";

The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre. The competition is open to the public, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the People's Choice award and vote for their favourite 3MT finals competitor.
Be a part of the audience and watch the 2015 3MT university-wide finalists compete.
Winners will be announced at the competition after a short deliberation by the judges.
The University of Waterloo 3MT winner will attend the 3MT Provincial finals at Western University in London on Thursday, April 23.
Don't just ride the bus... push it!
On Sunday, March 22nd, the Waterloo Engineering Society enthusiastically endured their annual Engineering Bus Push event.
By collectively pulling and pushing a school bus down our city streets and collecting pledges, this year’s 16 Bus Push volunteers raised over $700 for local charity, oneROOF: an organization that helps homeless and at risk youth in Waterloo Region.

Capstone Design Competition today
Student teams from the Faculty of Engineering will have 90 seconds to win over the judges when they pitch their inventive ideas for a chance at $60,000 today.
Judges selected the 15 finalists for the second-annual Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design from the 60 participants in the Capstone Design symposia held on campus in March. The five-day event showcased projects that senior engineering students spent months designing and building.
The Esch Foundation funds the awards, which support creative and entrepreneurial students in the pursuit of research and development and its commercialization for the benefit of Canada.
Pitches start at 2:00 p.m. in the Sedra Student Design Centre in Engineering 5.
