Treat-A-Gram 2015 a sweet success!

Once again, Waterloo’s annual, deliciously indulgent Treat-a-Gram was a BIG success, and we have YOU to thank for it!

An impressive $12,300 was raised by our Waterloo family, who generously purchased the sweet treats to show their gratitude and affection for colleagues and friends across our campuses. A whopping 3,223 cake pops in three decadent flavors were ordered, demonstrating what we all assumed and can now confirm — that any treat worth eating can and should be served on a stick! The idea for the cake pops was dreamed up this year by Denise Allen in Food Services. 

Back this year by popular demand, was the Treat-a-Gram postcard.  What the postcard lacked in sugariness it made up for in function; perfect for those who favored a sugar free offering or who wanted to send something to their colleagues in far off places, like our offices in Hong Kong.

Proceeds raised by this year’s Treat-a-Gram will go directly to the General Student Wellness Fund, supporting projects in health promotion, health education programming, and the integration of new health technologies.

Treat-a-Gram is brought to you each year by the Keystone Campaign and is made possible by the hard work of staff in the Office of Advancement and dedicated volunteers from across campus. A big, big shout-out to Central Stores this year for their help with the deliveries!

This weekend promises to be Fantastic

The 16th annual Fantastic Alumni, Faculty and Staff Day will take place on Saturday, February 21.

It's a time for family and friends to cheer on the Waterloo Warriors men's and women's basketball teams to victory as they compete against the Western Mustangs.

The women's game starts at 1:00 p.m. and the men's game takes place at 3:00 p.m. in the Physical Activities Complex.

As if the varsity games aren't enough of a draw, the halftime event during the women's game is the annual Alumni vs. Staff Monster Hoops Showdown. At halftime during the men's game will be the popular Airplane Toss. All registered guests will receive one free paper airplane upon admission, and additional airplanes can be purchased for $2 each. All proceeds raised from paper plane sales will go to KidSport KW.

Professor honoured by Black History Society

The Faculty of Arts has reported that Professor Jim Walker of the Department of History has been honoured with the Ontario Black History Society's Olivier Le Jeune Memorial Award.

The Olivier le Jeune Trailblazer Award was granted "in particular recognition of Professor Walker's work in creating the very first Canadian university courses in African-Canadian history at both the undergraduate and graduate level, which he did here at the University of Waterloo during the early 1970s."

Professor Walker, who has also been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, has long been recognized for his pioneering work to advance scholarship, education and action dedicated to black history and human rights in Canada.

Hurry hard to the Hagey Funspiel

The 43rd Annual Hagey Curling Bonspiel will take place on Saturday, February 21.

The annual sporting event is a longstanding campus tradition, and is named for the first president of the University of Waterloo, Gerry Hagey.

"Whether you are an experienced curler or have never curled before, you will enjoy the fun and frolics of this annual non-competitive event," writes organizer Sheila Hurley of the Safety Office. "Along with the two curling games, your registration includes a sit-down luncheon, snacks and prizes."

The event takes place at the Ayr Curling Club.
