Davis Library prepares to re-open

The Davis Centre Library is scheduled to re-open the first week of classes, says a note from Cheryl Kieswetter. "Over the spring and summer months we've built the RBC Information Commons, wired many tables and carrels on the main floor for power and data, rearranged the book stacks, replaced carpet, and more. Although all library services and resources will be available as of the first week of classes, some construction work will continue during September to complete the new entrance and exit and the Copy Centre. We will set up a temporary entrance and exit for this period."

To keep the campus community up-to-date on the progress of the renovations, library staff have created a website with news and information about the project. From the frequently asked questions section of the site:

Why is UW renovating the Davis Library?

[Magazine cover]

Forest products are the theme in the summer issue of Alternatives Journal, published in UW's faculty of environmental studies. Articles touch on urban forests, woodlands as "carbon sinks", logging practices, and even the "ancient-forest-friendly" paper used in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In an editorial, Robert Gibson of environment and resource studies recalls a winter he spent living in an old farmhouse: "We quickly came to judge our woodlot and other local forests mostly in terms of their potential for supplying slow burning, high BTU firewood. Even today, I can seldom walk through a forest without noticing the standing dead hardwood and considering how easy it might be to fell and split."

What is an Information Commons?

The RBC Information Commons is an area at the front of the Davis Library, near the Information and Circulation Desks. It is equipped with 38 workstations (one is barrier free) and an extensive suite of supported software (including MSOffice) and research tools to assist students through the entire sequence of steps when researching and completing their assignments. There will be sufficient space and seating for collaborative work and easy access to library staff for help with research strategies and skills. Think of the RBC Information Commons as a space where technology and expertise support the scholarly use of information resources.

Telling the city about Orientation Week -- by Kany Doski

A joint UW-Wilfrid Laurier University delegation will speak at Waterloo City Council tonight, to deliver a brief presentation about Orientation Week activities scheduled for the first full week of September.

UW's representatives are Heather Fitzgerald, Student Life Coordinator, and Dana Evans, Orientation Coordinator with the Federation of Students. They'll provide council members with an overview of the main principles of Orientation Week, which include responsibility, collaboration, balance and moderation, communication and acceptance. They will share the event schedule for the week, and explain the extent of training and preparation that has gone into this year's event.

"There are over 1,000 volunteers who have gone through eight hours of training in order to become orientation leaders this year," says Fitzgerald, "Their training has covered everything from health and safety to learning how to deal with diversity and harassment issues."

The university delegations will also request noise exemptions from the city for some of the week's special events -- in UW's case, the annual Toga Party, and an event called 'Movies on the Green.' Aside from special events planned for first-year students, there are mandatory program elements of their Orientation Week experience, consisting of campus tours and alcohol education.

Happening today

Unofficial spring term grades will begin to appear in QUEST this morning; the arts undergraduate office will be closed through to August 27 for its "annual advising hiatus"; and service to UW-ACE will not be available today to facilitate moving courses to the newest version of ANGEL (6.1).

Plant operations advises of two utility shutdowns:
