Special recognition award program for staff

A new program announced this week will put $1,000 cash awards in the hands of hard-working, committed staff members.

Following a recommendation by the provost's advisory committee on staff compensation, the vice president (academic) and provost, Amit Chakma, has approved the establishment of a special recognition awards program for staff as part of the 2004-2006 salary settlement for UW staff members.

Staff salary agreement 2004-2006

The 2004-2006 salary settlement for UW staff members mirrors the agreement reached between the university and the faculty association earlier this year. The settlement agreement provides for:
  • Effective May 1, 2004, a range adjustment of 3.3% to all USG job values and the hourly rate for janitors and housekeepers
  • Effective May 1, 2005, a range adjustment of 3.3% to all USG job values and the hourly rate for janitors and housekeepers
  • Regular merit program will be run in each of the years covered by the agreement
  • Extension of the 2% vacation trade iin for pension purposes to April 30, 2011 for retirement on or before May 1, 2014
  • 3.3% increase to the staff training and development program
  • Special recognition award program
The special recognition awards have been developed to "recognize the contributions of staff members who come to work each day committed to helping UW achieve its mission and our students to achieve their educational goals," says a memo circulating to staff members this week. "These contributions are made in a variety of ways and through a wide diversity of occupations and jobs at UW. Because of this diversity and because some jobs do not lend themselves to the spotlight as well as others, department heads are encouraged to seek out those dedicated and committed staff who may not always have the opportunity for special projects or highly visible success."

The lump-sum awards of $1,000 each (pro-rated for part-time staff) will come from an annual fund of $250,000. All regular ongoing full- and part-time staff are eligible for an award, which may be given at any time throughout the year with the exception of May and January -- two busy months for human resources. Any unspent funds in the $250,000 annual allotment will be carried forward to the next fiscal year.

Awards will be accompanied by letters of commendation from the department head, co-signed by the appropriate member of executive council, and copied to human resources for the employee's file. The names of special award recipients will also be published in on-campus communications vehicles like the Gazette, the Daily Bulletin, StaffNews, and Human Resources News.

USG grade levels and positions in the salary range will not be factors determining who receives special recognition awards. The idea behind the program is to recognize the everyday contributions of staff members who work to make UW successful. "It's for everyone," explains Catharine Scott, associate provost (human resources and student services). "We want to make particularly sure the unsung heroes get it."

Chefs win People's Choice trophy

UW chefs were awarded the coveted People's Choice Award trophy at the fourth annual Culinary Challenge that took place during the 2003 Canadian College and University Food Service Association Conference, June 26, at McMaster University.

Solar race team still in third
The University of Waterloo duels with traffic on Interstate 40 West toward Flagstaff, Ariz. UW's Midnight Sun VII solar race car team performed well yesterday despite high temperatures, holding on to third place in the American Solar Challenge event.

At the conference banquet, every registered guest was given a pre-printed ballot as they entered the ballroom to vote for the best overall menu and presentation for the People's Choice Award.

On the winning team were Marc Villeneuve, residence chef at Mudie's in Village One (team captain); Daniel LeMay, banquet chef for UW Catering in South Campus Hall; and Roland Lynn, cook at Brubakers in the Student Life Centre. Support was provided by UW food services managers Jeannie Watt and Sharron Pruss.

"The most prestigious of the awards presented that evening," said UW food services director Mark Murdoch, "the People's Choice Award recognizes the best overall display of skill from the consumer's perspective.

"Winning the award, from a broad-based consumer vote, highlights the very high level of skill among our culinary staff," he added. "Each year the level of competition has increased, and this in turn helps UW food services improve the skill set of our staff."

On the winning menu:

UW faced stiff competition from chefs representing McMaster, the University of Massachusetts, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and the university food service company Chartwells, which serves St. Jerome's University. The best overall medal went to McMaster, with second and third place going to NAIT and Chartwells, respectively.

Food services is hoping to offer the prize-winning menu on campus, but due to vacation scheduling conflicts for the remainder of the summer term and the hectic pace of a September start up, it may not be until after Thanksgiving, said Murdoch.
