Work has begun on the $8.2 million, three-storey addition to Engineering 3, which will provide 44,000 square feet of space for engineering offices and laboratories, including facilities for mechatronics research and "clean room" labs for computer hardware research. In addition, a partial second storey will be added to the existing Engineering 3 structure. To date, $6.1 million has been provided by federal and provincial government programs, with the balance yet to be raised. Construction is expected to be completed by September 2003.

New fall continuing ed courses

Build better teams, beat stress, improve your French pronunciation, edit and sell sci fi and fantasy short stories: it's all possible with just a sampling of the many new UW continuing education courses included in the fall 2002 calendar.

Starting in September, the department of distance and continuing education will be augmenting its continuing education favourites with six new professional development courses, two more in communication and languages, four first-time courses in computing skills, a new Powerpoint class for kids, and a two additional personal development courses.

Distance and Continuing Education's departmental fax number has changed to 746-4607. The old fax number is no longer in service.
As well, 13 new online courses are being offered through an agreement with Education to Go.

"This calendar outlines courses offered in September, October and November designed to help you meet your lifelong learning needs," says continuing education manager Maureen Jones, "courses in leadership, mediation, and project management to name a few."

Continuing education also offers private in-house training courses, "tailored to your needs, at your convenience." Customized courses can be offered on site to meet the specific training needs of an organization.

Full-time UW staff are eligible for a 50 per cent tuition discount; faculty and students can receive a 25 per cent discount on most courses. Registration can be conducted online, by phone at ext. 4002, or at the continuing ed offices at 335 Gage Ave. in Kitchener.

First Keystone Campaign draw winners announced

Each month, names of Keystone Campaign donors will be entered into a draw for prizes. The first nine winners were drawn this month and will receive a letter telling them where they can pick up their prizes: The Keystone Campaign represents the collective efforts of faculty, staff and retirees in supporting UW. By giving to the Keystone Campaign, donors have a chance to win a prize such as a restaurant gift certificate, book, travel voucher, personal service, car rental, theatre tickets and more.

The Keystone Campaign goal is $4.5 million by 2007, and every donation helps Waterloo to "build a talent trust." To make a donation, visit the Keystone Campaign web site or call extension 5422. Keystone Campaign monthly draw highlights and information will also appear on the web site.
