An apple a day for 2,500 athletes staying at UW during the Ontario Summer Games this weekend makes for a mountain of fruit. Hefting one of the cartons of supplies at the South Campus Hall dining rooms is new food services banquet chef supervisor Daniel Lemay, who just arrived here two weeks ago.

Students present 'green' research

Over the past three months, students in the environment and resource studies Greening the Campus and the Community course have developed research projects designed to test criteria for sustainability in a variety of settings, both on and off campus.

Nine groups of students will present the results of their studies for the public this morning, and on Thursday, July 25, in RCH room 204 as follows:

Greening the campus began in the United States in the early 1980's with the idea that university campuses should model the world that students seek to create.

The first university in Canada to adopt the program in 1990, UW developed a WATgreen committee, which was soon supported by the ERS 250 course. Over the years, the course has worked on many projects related to resource reduction and waste production.

Waterloo band plays for the pontiff

UW engineering professors David Wang (electrical and computer) and Eric Kubica (systems design), members of the Catholic rock band Critical Mass, will perform for the World Youth Day visit to Toronto by Pope John Paul II next week.

[Critical mass logo] "Of particular note is a concert (free will offering or a donation to the food bank) at Kitchener City Hall on July 19 in the evening starting at 8:30," says Wang, concert promoter for the group.

"As well, the band is honoured to be the group providing musical accompaniment at the Pope's Welcoming Ceremony on July 25 at 5 p.m. and at the Papal Vigil on July 27 at 7 p.m. Both will be broadcast live on the CBC."

Other Critical Mass concerts scheduled during the papal visit include:

The band's song "Share it with the World" is included on the official World Youth Day 2002 compilation CD. Critical Mass also has a live album, "Mass of Joy," written in part for the World Youth Day 2002 celebrations.
