Midnight Sun update: UW's solar car team finished in fourth place in Thursday afternoon's overall standings at the American Solar Challenge race down Route 66. Here are Thursday's checkpoint results: |
The Summer 2001 issue profiles two members of the university's Laurel Society, which "honours individuals who indicate they are giving a planned or deferred gift (such as a bequest, life insurance or charitable gift annuity) to the University of Waterloo and/or the University Colleges." As of May 1, the Laurel Society had more than 240 members.
One of the donors profiled is Mary Bales -- former student, volunteer and member of the board of governors. She describes planned giving as a positive experience: "It is important for me to provide for the University of Waterloo in my will, and many of the other local charities which matter to me, because they make such a substantial difference...
"Knowing that my estate will provide for the charities I care about somehow makes the end of my life a beginning, not an ending.
The latest issue of Insights also gives general information on planning your estate, and about capital gains tax incentives that may be realized by making a gift to UW.
Brent Charette, who graduated from St. Jerome's in 1993, is the new contact for planned giving, having taken over from Pat Cunningham who is now the alumni officer in the faculty of math. Charette says "planned gifts allow people to make substantial gifts -- in many cases, far larger than they were able to make annually." For more information about UW's planned giving program, you can contact Charette at ext. 5413 or by email at bcharett@uwaterloo.ca.
From the Registrar: "We encountered problems that prevented students who had QUEST appointments on Wednesday, July 18 from 6 to 10 p.m. from accessing myQUEST. "If you had an appointment on Wednesday night but were unable to submit your course selections, you will be given another QUEST appointment on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m." |
Students have several options for paying their fees, including directly through their financial institution.
The bank payment option is available at all Canadian chartered banks, and most trust companies and credit unions, using any of the following methods:
For those students choosing the bank payment option, the fee payment deadline is extended to September 3, 2001.
Fees may still be paid by cheque or money order made payable to the University of Waterloo. For students choosing this method, payment must be received by August 27, 2001 -- otherwise, late fees will apply. More information about paying or arranging fees will be included with fee bills that will be mailed out by early August.
Photos by Barbara Elve The menu that took first prize for UW in the Chef's Culinary Competition at the recent conference of the Canadian College and University Food Service Association was cooked up for students at a special dinner at Village 1 on Wednesday. Award-winning chefs Roland Lynn, Victor Iacobellis and Peter McCarthy served their smoked salmon napoleon, peppercorn crusted pinwheel pork loin roast, and sundried cherry cheesecake to a sell-out crowd of 125, including Lindsay Hilts and Matt Moore (above). An encore performance of the feast will be held at the University Club on Friday, July 27. For reservations, phone ext. 3801. |
The schedule of tuition and incidental fees is available at the following websites:
Gays and Lesbians of Waterloo host a Boys & Boyz & Girls & Grrls Night at the Bombshelter pub this evening. The event is a take-off on Federation Hall's popular "Boys and Girls Night" -- festivities begin at 9 p.m.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Ontario college and university division provincial dragon boat championships will take place at the Laurel Creek conservation area on Saturday. For more information, go to www.waterloodragonboat.com.
And on Sunday, the City of Waterloo's Free Summer Concert Series continues with big band, world beat, concert, and dance music at the Centennial Bandshell (west side of Waterloo Park). The Sunday Concerts in the Park will continue through August 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. each week.
