In a letter being sent to some 3,000 members of the university community, Johnston notes that the target September enrolment of 4,060 first-year students has been exceeded by "as many as 500 additional frosh.
"In order to accommodate such an influx of eager young minds, we are gearing up our housing program by making a special appeal to find comfortable accommodation for these newest members of our UW family," he writes.
To help alleviate what he terms "a critical situation," Johnston asks those who can provide a room and/or room and board for four- or eight-month terms, beginning in September, to contact the housing office (ext. 5725 or 5438). The office can provide information about types of accommodation and rates, and will waive its usual $20 listing fee.
"This is an excellent opportunity for members of our UW family to help young students adjust to their new, sometimes daunting surroundings," Johnston adds. "You can provide not only accommodation, but a friendly presence and a welcoming voice and hand."
Plans are underway to boost the number of rooms for students on campus, but the additional accommodation won't be ready in time for this fall.
At UW Apartments (formerly Married Student Apartments), 240 rooms in East Tower will be ready for September 2000 as part of renovations scheduled to begin next January. By September 2001, North Court renovations will add an additional 360 rooms, and construction of a new residence building -- adjacent to the Villages -- will provide 300 rooms. Work is scheduled to begin on the West Tower in January 2002 to create an extra 240 rooms by September 2002.
Total construction and renovation costs for these projects are estimated at $24 million.
Plans also call for both Villages to accommodate first-year students exclusively by September 2000 (adding 300 beds) with East Tower at UWA housing most of the 300 upper year students displaced from the Villages at that time. As well, Columbia Lake Townhouses will be reserved for first-year students starting in September 2001, which, with the new Village residence, will create another 600 beds for frosh. Upper year students displaced from Columbia Lake Townhouses in September 2001 are slated to move to North Court in UWA.
Disqualified in Toronto for veering out of their lane, the 23 science and business students -- only in their second year of the sport -- intend to paddle the straight and narrow and salvage their reputation in the local competition, according to team member Aneil Gokhale.
The races run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Golden Dragons scheduled for their first event at 11:12 a.m. Everyone is invited to cheer on the team.
Davis Centre -- Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 midnight; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 12 midnight; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Dana Porter -- Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 midnight; Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 12 midnight.
Volunteers with carpentry skills are being sought to help build sets for Second Company productions this summer, and a variety of volunteers (grounds crews, concession and souvenir sales, parking attendants, scorekeeper, etc.) are needed to assist with the Canadian Midget Boys Fastpitch Championship from August 7 to 16.
To learn more about these and other volunteer opportunities, phone the VAC at 742-8610.
