They promise 'fun and friends'

[Campus rec scene] "New fitness and instructional programs!" says the "incredible" campus recreation guidebook for this term. "New Saturday Fitness and Rec swim hours! You must have a ticket to register!"

So with the campus rec programs for this term about to begin -- kayaking, chi kung, bicycle maintenance, broomball and all the rest -- here's a little basic information about how to get involved:

(1) You'll need a WatCard.

(2) For currently registered students, a valid sticker on your card proves your Campus Rec membership. For others, it's a matter of buying a membership at Physical Activities room 2039 ($26.75 for co-op students on work term, $64.20 for faculty, staff and alumni, $107 for off-campus folks).

(3) You may want a locker -- sign up for one today ($10 for the term) at the PAC "red activity area". Charges go up by $3 starting tomorrow, if there are lockers left. (Or you can pay 50 cents for a day locker when you need one.)

(4) For many activities, such as recreational swimming, you need only show up during the scheduled hours.

(5) For recreational programs, registration runs next week, with ticket pickup on Tuesday morning in PAC "red north" and actual registration running Tuesday night and Wednesday according to the times shown on tickets. Typical prices: $27.07 for twice-a-week Fitness Express, $53.50 for Bronze Medallion lifesaving, $12.84 for a canoe clinic, $26.75 for Introduction to Tai Chi.

Registration for teams in Campus Rec leagues (soccer, flag football, ball hockey and so on) starts Tuesday.

And then there are the clubs -- curling, rowing, equestrian, fencing, table tennis, kendo and the rest -- which are holding organizational meetings in the next few days. Here's a notice from one of them, as provided by Kim Martin of the math faculty computing facility:

The University of Waterloo Martial Arts Club Demonstration and Sign-Up is at 7:00 p.m. tonight, September 11, in the Blue Activity area of the PAC. The University Club is run by qualified Black Belts that volunteer their time to instruct students, faculty and staff in the various martial arts. Currently the Club offers three different martial arts: Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Aiki Jujutsu. The three arts will be demonstrated and discussions with the different instructors after the demonstration is encouraged.

Contrary to popular belief not all martial arts are taught with preliminary techniques that require you to do 3,000 push-ups, wax 10 cars repeatedly, or lie on hot coals. The University Club has always had the philosophy that you must be able to write your exams/midterms tomorrow, and you shouldn't have to do it wearing a thin film of Rub-A535. If you have any questions please contact Kim Martin, ext. 2457, or email klmartin@math.

In case of a postal strike

It doesn't look good for mail service to continue through this fall without a strike against Canada Post by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Like other organizations, UW is getting ready to deal with the disruption if it happens -- and so a memo is out from Carmen Jaray of central stores, advising that UW has an arrangement for getting mail in from the United States.

In case of a mail stoppage, she says, mail from the U.S. to anyone at UW should be addressed like this:

Mailfast
Attn: [Your name, your department]
YYZ-YYZ-700295
PO Box 9018
Jericho NY 11753-8918
Note carefully: the words "University of Waterloo" don't, and shouldn't, appear anywhere in that address.

"This will ensure," says Jaray, "that your mail will get here in a reasonable amount of time without it being held by Canada Post in the event that they go on strike. Please make sure that your name and department is on the second line of the address so when we receive this mail we know where to send it."

Stay tuned. And no, I don't know where Jericho, New York, is, but the Zip code would suggest that it's pretty close to Buffalo.

A few things are happening

The co-op education and career services department continues its sessions for students who will be graduating this year -- undergraduate and graduate, co-op and regular. The meetings will explain career and employment services available at UW. Here's the schedule:
Arts: today at 10:30, Arts Lecture 116.
Environmental studies: today at 12:30, Arts Lecture 113.
Science: today at 2:00, Biology 1 room 271.
Applied health sciences: Friday at 10:30, Matthews Hall 1621.
All faculties: today at 3:30, Humanities Theatre.
Also from the co-op and career folks: resumé writing seminars tomorrow, for accounting students at 2:30 in Arts Lecture 116, for architecture students at 2:30 in Arts Lecture 207.

And . . . let it bleed. The Canadian Red Cross has a blood donor clinic scheduled for next Monday through Wednesday in the Student Life Centre, and booking of appointments starts today. You can speak to a real live Red Cross person in the SLC today or tomorrow from 11:30 to 1:30 and make your appointment to give blood next week; or you can sign a roster at the SLC turnkey desk after 1:30 today, and all weekend. More information: 744-6110.
