UW at forty dot celebrate
The UW 40th anniversary logo is going to be seen a lot more on campus
in the next few days, as the
UW
Shop in South Campus Hall will soon have T-shirts, sweatshirts,
coffee mugs and other souvenirs showing it off and boasting about
our forty-year-old university. And there are other places to
see it too:
- Big overhead banners that will be used at major events on campus
all this year, starting with the March 11 "Campus Day" visit of
high schoolers and their parents to find out what Waterloo's
all about.
- A 40th anniversary Web site, to be unveiled soon.
- The souvenir booklet The Waterloo Adventure, produced by
my colleagues here in the information and public affairs office, and
expected to hit campus within two weeks.
- Any mail that arrives from UW: the central stores postage meter
is now printing the 40th anniversary logo right next to the date
and postage indicator.
Celebrations of the anniversary will focus on the "Friends and Founders"
event on May 27, the faculty and staff picnic June 3, Canada Day on
July 1, and a few other big occasions. Banners, food, congratulatory
speeches, souvenirs -- really, it's enough to make
Simon the
troll bite somebody in the leg.
Seeking to represent staff
Check out page 2 of this morning's Gazette for statements from
four staff members who are seeking election to the UW board of
governors. The incumbent, Barry Scott of the office of research, is
looking to be re-elected, and has three challengers:
Peter McCarthy of food services;
John Sellens of
information systems and technology (data processing);
and Joe Szalai of the library's user services department.
Staff have two seats on the 36-member board of governors; the other
representative at present is Helena Hahn of the dean of science
office. The current election is for a three-year term on the board
beginning May 1, 1997. Ballots will be mailed to staff members
next week,
the
university secretariat says.
On Johnny Cash's birthday
"Java computing changes everything," say the folks from
Sun Microsystems, whose "6th annual education tour" hits
campus today, sponsored by the Computer Store. Speakers and
demonstrations about Java are scheduled in Davis Centre room
1302 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Toronto poet and short-story writer Gil Adamson will give
a reading this afternoon at St. Jerome's College (1:30 p.m.,
St. Jerome's room 221).
What's described as "a show about art for art's sake" is
scheduled for the Student Life Centre today and tomorrow, under the
title "Fed Up! An Art Show". It can be seen from 10:30 to 5
today, 10:30 to 6 tomorrow, in the multi-purpose room.
The Economics Society is co-sponsor (with its counterpart at
Wilfrid Laurier University) of a talk on the recent federal
budget, to be given at 5:30 today in room 1003 of the
Peters Building at WLU. The two speakers are Anna Guthrie of the
Toronto-Dominion Bank and John Hoicka of the Ontario ministry
of finance.
Merrill Hunsberger, who teaches history at UW and Renison College
and who's taking a tour to China this summer under the sponsorship of
TourMagination ("Mennonite Tour Specialists"), will give a preview
of the trip, with slides, at 7:30 this evening at Erb Street
Mennonnite Church, 131 Erb Street West.
Local volunteers are wanted
The Volunteer Action Centre is looking for people to take
these roles:
- Public speakers, "to make presentations to groups interested in
setting up a Neighbourhood Watch program". Listing 050-1193.
- Recording secretary for "a municipal committee whose role
is to increase the awareness of issues faced by people with
physical disabilities". Listing 101-1850.
- English tutors to work one-on-one with new Canadians:
"Curriculum varies from basic conversation to advanced writing."
Listing 051-270.
- Special project volunteer for a local library, someone "who has
a knowledge of libraries and computer catalogues", to "list names
of local history vertical file and prepare them for data entry".
Listing 119-1867.
More information? Other volunteer opportunities? The VAC can be
reached at 742-8610.
And finally, this correction
I said in yesterday's Bulletin that Ken Hull was a faculty
member at Renison College. In fact he's on the faculty at Conrad
Grebel College, although the talk he was giving yesterday was
indeed at Renison.
CAR
