Ian Lithgow |
Lithgow's responsibilities include the office of development and alumni affairs and the office of information and public affairs. He's moving into the office on the third floor of Needles Hall that was used by the last VP (university relations), Roger Downer, until his retirement a year ago.
Also new in office today is Mike Sharratt, as interim dean of applied health sciences. He'll serve through next June 30, while a search committee looks for a new dean. Sharratt is a kinesiology professor, has served as associate dean (graduate studies and research) in AHS, and is winding up a term as president of the Canadian Association for Exercise Physiology.
Participants in the International Conference on Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems are arriving at Ron Eydt Village for the weekend. The organizers, based in UW's applied mathematics department, explain: "This conference will focus on recent advances in the theory and applications of differential equations and dynamical systems, including ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, functional differential equations, impulsive differential equations and their corresponding discrete analogs. There will be several invited expository addresses covering recent trends and many invited lectures on problems of current interest and important applications in various disciplines."
People from the Vietnamese Student Association, and counterparts at half a dozen other Ontario universities, are heading for Elora Conservation Area for the weekend, to take place in Camp Song Viet '97.
The staff association office will be closed August 5 through 15, reopening August 18.
Here, so far as I have them, are specifics of what's in operation at Waterloo this weekend:
What's playing on campus, in Kitchener-Waterloo and in Toronto? CKMS knows, and if you miss the daily on-air announcements (at 9:10 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.) here's the Web page where you can find all the listings.
Bill Wharrie, technical coordinator for the UW-based radio station, explains that the concert listings are just part of the overall CKMS site, http://watserv1.uwaterloo.ca/~ckmsinfo:
Our web site has several purposes. One is to provide our schedule. Unlike commercial radio, we have different types of programs (catering to different interests) throughout the day and week. The second is to give potential volunteers an idea of what we're all about. A third is to publish our "charts" -- listings of the top 35 releases each week, and top 50 each month. This can help listeners get an idea of the variety of music we play. Finally, we provide links to sites of our volunteers, other Canadian campus and community radio stations, other UW media, and other radio- and music-related sites.Other features of the CKMS site include a history of the station's early years. The site has been designed with a minimum of graphic content so that people browsing it don't have to wait too long for each page to load. We do not use frames or Java -- virtually any browser can handle our site.
