It's not an unlucky day
Even if it is
Friday the thirteenth,
it's also
Rosh Hashanah:
the beginning of a new year according to the
Jewish calendar. The first day of the month of Tishri in the year 5757
begins at sundown this evening. The
Waterloo Jewish
Students Association notes services this evening and tomorrow morning
both at Temple Shalom in Waterloo and at Beth Jacob Synagogue in
Kitchener. L'shana tova tikotenu!
Campus rec is in action
Leafing through the
campus
recreation brochure, I see that registration for fitness and other
classes is scheduled for this coming Wednesday and Thursday. First
step: pick up a ticket on Wednesday between 8:30 and 1:00 at the
"red north, main level corner" of the Physical Activities Complex.
(Fitness programs have a geography prerequisite, I guess.) Second
step: register at PAC room 2039 at the time indicated on your ticket,
and be sure to bring your WatCard with you.
Rebecca Boyd, the athletics department's fitness and aquatics
coordinator, says Campus Rec is currently looking for fitness
instructors. Applications are available in the athletics department
office in the PAC.
And she
sends word of some highlights she'd like people to
know about:
Campus Recreation is offering a Lifesaving Society Diploma Course
this term. Diploma is the highest award possible from any Lifesaving
Society. There are currently 300 people in Canada who have obtained
the award and 100 of those are in Ontario. An information meeting
has been scheduled for Thursday, September 26, at PAC 1001 for 6 p.m. . . .
The Fitness and Aquatics areas of Campus Recreation are hosting an
Aquafitness Instructor Workshop on September 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and September 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This workshop is for anyone
who is interested in becoming an aquafit instructor, or has an
interest in aquafitness in general. Cost is $5. . . .
For more information, Boyd can be reached at ext. 5034.
Happening today at Waterloo
The UW soccer team "will be lending a helping hand" at Brubaker's
cafeteria in the Student Life Centre, from 11:30 to 1:30 today, says
Michele Grondin in the food services department.
Nancy-Lou Patterson, retired professor of fine arts, has a new book
out -- a novel, Barricade Summer -- and will be reading from it,
and signing copies of her books, from 7 to 9 this evening at Westmount
Place mall. Tomorrow, also at Westmount Place, Patterson will appear
as part of a children's reading event, from 1:45 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to
2:45.
The Federation of Students sponsors "Fed Info Days", with a mixture of
information and entertainment, today in the Student Life Centre.
The weekend and next week
Just a few things:
- Warrior and Athena athletes head for the University of Guelph
tomorrow, where UW's teams will face the Gryphons in football (men)
and soccer (both men and women). The Athena field
hockey squad will play tomorrow at Trent University.
- The Doughboys and Pluto play Federation Hall on Saturday night.
- "Community Living benefit shows" are scheduled for noon and
3 p.m. Sunday in the Humanities Theatre.
And finally: information sessions about graduate scholarship funding
-- of special interest to today's undergraduate students who are
thinking of moving on to master's and PhD study -- are scheduled
for next week. Elaine Garner, of the graduate studies office, says
a session for the faculty of arts is scheduled for Tuesday at 12:30
in Humanities room 334; for the faculty of science, Tuesday at 3:30
in Biology 1 room 226; for the faculty of mathematics, Wednesday at
3:30 p.m. in Davis Centre room 1302.
