Where to find kindred spirits

Dumb old joke, updated:
Do you believe in clubs for students?

Only if kindness fails.

Well, today and tomorrow students have a chance to enhance their social lives by checking out clubs days in the Student Life Centre. More than 50 clubs, be they hobby-based, religious, cultural and other, will have their wares on display and will be present to share club information. This long UW tradition gives clubs an "opportunity to showcase what they're about and attract new members," says Julie Primeau, vice-president (internal) of the Federation of Students, which recognizes campus clubs. "There's a lot of information and there should be some quite colourful displays."

As beginning-of-term activities continue, the day after tomorrow -- Friday the 13th -- should not be unlucky for "Feds-fest" in the Student Life Centre. Instead, the day of displays and information booths will give the whole campus a chance to come out and learn about what the Federation of Students offers. Says Primeau: "There will be plenty of info booths, prize give-aways, jugglers, fire-breathers and music, you name it." Other things on display include the Feds' safety van and information on all Federation business and social services. "Feds is more than just the owner of two bars," Primeau says.

A litany of news briefs

Canada 4, United States 3. And a little closer to home:

UW's team placed 15th out of 104 entries at the "Corporate Challenge" on Sunday, a light-hearted competition among teams from local employers and organizations. "That's our best record, by far," says Nancy Elash of the community relations office, who put together faculty, staff and student good sports for the team.

Yesterday's Bulletin noted the fall term hours for UW libraries and some food services outlets, and Steve Breen, who runs the Customer Support Centre in information systems and technology, suggests that we mention the CSC's hours too. Certainly. It's open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 8:30 to 7:45. Available at the centre, on the bottom floor of the Math and Computer building: "terminal server accounts, laser printing (colour and black and white), helpdesk for software and hardware problems". The phone number is 888-4839.

A clipping from the Labour Day issue of the Toronto Sun hit my desk yesterday -- not just any clipping, but the page-three Sunshine Girl. The lady of the day is wearing red sweats, and the text reads: "Between attending language courses at the University of Waterloo and raising two sons, it's surprising blue-eyed Deanna finds time to do her favourite things, like travelling and riding her horse, Hope." If blue-eyed Deanna has a surname, it's not given.

The food services department is advertising a "Hawaiian Luau pig roast buffet" at Brubaker's, in the Student Life Centre, on Tuesday evening, September 24. Tickets, at $10.95, are for sale until September 16 at food outlets.

Psychologist Robert Ross, now on the University of Ottawa faculty, is on trial in Kitchener this week for offences (ranging from rape to breach of trust) alleged to have been committed while he was chief psychologist at the Grandview reform school in Cambridge in the 1970s. There is a slight UW connection: according to the dean of arts office, records show Ross listed as an adjunct professor at UW from September 1964 through August 1966; an associate professor (part-time) from September 1966 through June 1975; and an adjunct associate professor from September 1975 through April 1976. In 1976 the reform school closed and Ross left for Ottawa. The school was controversial as early as 1968, when Ross wrote a letter to government officials defending the treatment program in use there; a news report in 1993 said that letter was written on UW stationery.

Local volunteers are wanted

The local Volunteer Action Centre is looking for help: The VAC can be reached at 742-8610 for more information, not to mention other volunteer positions that are available.
