The day when ghosts gibber
The sun was shining brightly when I began to write this
Bulletin, and ten minutes later there were
snowflakes in
the air. Winter is closing in, and now we
look forward to the hours of darkness -- or seek out
some creepy stuff on the
Web. It's Hallowe'en, the modern survival of the pagan
festival
Samhain,
and little goblins will definitely be out tonight. During the day,
too, as the kids from the psychology department's
early childhood
education centre go trick-or-treating through the PAS building.
There's a Hallowe'en party at the Graduate House tonight (grad students
and guests), and though I don't have any specific information, I'd
be surprised if a good many patrons of the Bombshelter and Federation
Hall don't show up in costume tonight.
Talking about residence life
The Student Affairs Network Group has an event at 3:00 this afternoon
and invites everyone: a presentation on "What
residence
life means for higher education at UW".
The event will be be held in the north lounge of Ron Eydt Village
(formerly Village II).
Daniel Shipp of the Student Life Centre explains what the
Student Affairs Network Group is all about:
SANG is approximately 6 years old
with a membership of approximately 60 staff and faculty and
tries to meet two or three times a term. The co-chairs for this year are Rose
Padacz, Denise Angove and me. The meeting structures tend to
accommodate a professional development presentation on some aspect of
student affairs (diversity, res life, health, student leadership, etc.)
with a good 45 minutes dedicated to a round table activities update.
SANG is not a policy group in any way. It is a forum for idea sharing,
networking and development and promotion of the field of student affairs.
For more information, Shipp is at ext. 5438.
Reminders of today's events
- The "international work abroad forum", organized by the career
resource centre, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the
multipurpose room of the Student Life Centre.
- Training on the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information
System, at 2 p.m. (for about an hour) in Davis Centre room 1304.
- The next Taiwanese movie in a series presented by the fine arts
Film Society: "A Piggy Tale (Wa-Wa)", at 7 p.m. in East
Campus Hall room 1219.
And a rather special event in the architecture school's Arriscraft
Lecture series. At 8 p.m. in the "green room" of Environmental Studies
II, Robert Jan van Pelt of UW and Deborah Dwork of Yale University
talk about
their research
into the architecture of Auschwitz, the most famous Nazi death camp.
First look at the Warriors
As the football playoffs are about to begin, so is the basketball
season. The UW Warriors start their first game of the season at 8
tonight in the main gym of the Physical Activities Complex. It's an
exhibition contest against a team from Toronto's George Brown
College -- and besides some good basketball down on the court,
up in the stands there will be prizes for the best Hallowe'en
costumes.
Two reminders of what's coming
The arts alumni group holds its theatre-party outing to Toronto
tomorrow, a trip to see "Arcadia" at the St. Lawrence Centre.
Last-minute information: ext. 2005.
The
faculty
association will hold a special general meeting Tuesday,
November 5, at 4 p.m. in Arts Lecture room 116 "to discuss
the progress of salary negotiations".
