Something for co-op employers

Co-op employers on campus to interview students this term will be invited to take a lunch break with a difference, says Cathie Jenkins, associate director (program services) of the co-op education department:
Each Tuesday and Thursday during the co-op interview period (October 7 through November 1), a thought-provoking speaker from one of UW's six faculties or CECS will address participants on topics ranging from cutting edge research to hot tips on how to make the most of UW's co-op program.

The initiative called "Chew on This!" will give employers an opportunity to learn about some exciting and innovative teaching and research activities of faculty who are highly regarded in their field. Our department is trying to find creative ways to strengthen the vital partnership between employers of our co-op students and the university.

The noon-hour series is a pilot project. In our job development efforts we have been trying to arrange for greater interaction between employers and faculty. And faculty has responded with enthusiasm. We hope participants will take their new-found knowledge back to work-place colleagues as well as to their friends and families and that UW and co-op education will ultimately benefit from the publicity.

All this and free coffee too. . . .

Evangelist speaks on campus

In a side trip from Festival '96, a four-day crusade in Kitchener, evangelist Franklin Graham makes a stop on campus today. He'll speak at 12 noon in the Humanities Theatre -- and also appearing will be Dennis Agajanian, described as "fastest flat-picking guitar in the world".

Graham, the son and heir of Billy Graham, is -- besides being a preacher -- a pilot and the president of Samaritan's Purse, "a nonprofit Christian organization specializing in meeting emergency needs in crisis areas of the world by combining relief assistance and evangelism". He's expected to tell some exciting stories of his work in such places as Bosnia and Rwanda.

If departments are closing

When the 1996 staff salary increase package was announced, part of the deal was some extra vacation time this year:
Three additional paid holidays be awarded for 1996-97, to be used by June 30, 1997. Departments are encouraged to consider the possibility of selecting a common day of holiday, for example, December 23, 1996. This may be done only with the approval of each staff member in the department, the department head or chair, and the Provost.
With an eye to writing something in the Gazette, I'd appreciate hearing from department heads -- and other individuals -- about any arrangements of that kind that are being made, any unusual ways people are taking their extra vacation days, and any comments about the whole business.

Warriors 6, Western 1

Yes, yes, UW defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on Saturday afternoon, and the last I heard, sports historians still hadn't pinpointed the last time Waterloo beat Western on the football field, if indeed it's ever happened before. I had a couple of messages yesterday scolding me for not having the football score in Monday morning's Daily Bulletin. Sorry about that. As a result of advice given to me yesterday, I think I now have a reliable source of weekend sports scores in time for the Bulletin on future Mondays. Or -- when it's a holiday weekend like the one coming up -- Tuesdays.
