Big day at St. Jerome's

The official dedication of a new wing at St. Jerome's College, being called the St. Jerome's Community Centre, happens at 2 p.m. today. A formal blessing of the facility by Anthony Tonnos, Bishop of Hamilton, will be followed by greetings from local dignitaries, guided tours, refreshments, and St. Jerome's hospitality.

The recently completed Community Centre is "the place where members of the St. Jerome's community -- SJC residents, students, faculty and staff, and others -- mingle on a casual basis, build friendships, and develop intellectually". The new facility, with a serving and seating capacity for 300 people, more than doubles the capacity of the former college cafeteria and joins the St. Jerome's women's residence (formerly the Notre Dame College building) with the J. R. Finn men's residence.

The centre cost $2.4 million, which is to be paid from the St. Jerome's capital campaign begun last spring. The facility includes a modern kitchen and servery, lighting and sound systems for musical and artistic shows, and a president's lounge for banquets and meetings.

Dignitaries attending today's dedication will include Elizabeth Witmer, Ontario minister of labour and Waterloo North MPP, John English, MP for Kitchener (and a UW history professor), and James Downey, UW president.

And for a good cause . . .

Also at St. Jerome's today: the 3:30 p.m. opening ceremonies of the college's 21st annual "charity run". A symbolic first lap around the ring road will follow a reflection and blessing by Jim Link, St. Jerome's chaplain. There will also be greetings from Witmer, English, and Downey as well as Federation of Students president Mario Bellabarba.

This year's recipient charities for the Run, K-W Counselling and Interfaith Counselling, serve individuals who have emotional and relationship difficulties. The relay begins right after the ceremonies at St. Jerome's Siegfried Hall.

Initiated in 1976 by two St. Jerome's students, the charity run gives the SJC students an opportunity to give something back to the K-W community that they call home for eight months of the year. The week of events culminates in a symbolic 48-hour continuous relay around the ring road.

Warning: FASS is coming

"Why wait for January?" asks Anita Kilgour, this year's director for the FASS Theatre Company, which is "celebrating 35 years of musical comedy, friendship and fun" as it gets ready to stage "Arthur, the FanFASStic Quest" early in 1997.

FASS is holding a "fall kick-off" tonight -- Davis Centre room 1301, starting at 7:30 -- and Kilgour insists it's an evening nobody would want to miss:

At last word, the show was still looking for a music director, a choreographer and an assistant director -- not to mention hundreds of writers, performers and crew.

Events on a bright cold day

As part of the continuing "Kinesiology Keynote Series", Jim Kile, who took his kinesiology degree in 1986, will speak today about his experiences as a medical officer with United Nations peacekeepers in Yugoslavia. His talk starts at 2:30 in Davis Centre room 1304.

The Chinese Christian Fellowship sponsors a coffee house tonight in the great hall of Conrad Grebel College. Activities start at 7:30. "Please join us," writes organizer Grace Lo, "as we share God's love through singing, skits, sharing and food!"

The Bettina Russell Film Festival continues today and tomorrow at Wilfrid Laurier University, with films on such topics as "women and aging", "social action", "women and work", and "body image". Information: the continuing education office at WLU, 884-0710 ext. 4106.

Looking to the weekend

Semi-finally, need I remind anyone that Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is only a week away?

And finally, a note for people in Carl Pollock Hall ("Engineering IV" for the old-timers): Hot and cold water in the north wing of the building will be shut off Monday from 8 a.m. to noon so the plant operations department can repair a leak.
