About the binaries newsgroups

A proposed policy on computer newsgroups, which would have the effect of eliminating "binaries" newsgroups (photos, sounds, software) at UW, will be presented at a public meeting at noontime today. Members of the "working group on news management" will be there to explain their recommendation that
the University cease importation of any newsgroup hierarchy whose volume constitutes a significant portion of the total and whose primary function appears to be the dissemination of non-text content (such as picture files, executable software, or sound files) on November 1, 1996.
The information systems and technology department announced this morning that during September, UW imported 1197.1 megabytes per day of Internet "news" -- of which 825.5 megabytes, or 69 per cent, was in the alt.binaries hierarchy.

Today's meeting runs from 11:45 to 1:15 in Math and Computer room 2066.

To support the United Way

Many people across campus are marking Casual Day today, wearing their sloppies to work in return for a $2 donation to the United Way. October marks the university's annual campaign for the United Way, this year with a $145,000 target.

Here's part of a letter about the campaign from UW president James Downey:

United Way agencies make such a palpable difference in the lives of those whose distress they seek to relieve that it is hard to imagine how at present we could think of ourselves as a caring society without them. We need those agencies and the fine and competent people who staff them to express the compassion we feel but haven't the time or perhaps the disposition to express directly. Just as acutely, the agencies need us.

May I again this year commend to you the United Way as the most effective and comprehensive instrument of charity in our community. It is also one of the most efficient, with 87 cents of every dollar donated going to member agencies.

As Albert Camus once said: "Perhaps we cannot prevent this world from being a world in which children suffer. But we can lessen the number of suffering children. And if you do not help us do this, who will?"

Nominating committee for provost

Jim Kalbfleisch became UW's vice-president (academic) and provost July 1, 1993, for a five-year term -- which means it's time, under the rules of UW Policy 48, to set up a nominating committee which will either recommend him for another term or find his successor.

Several members of the nominating committee are to be elected by faculty members. The university secretariat has issued a call for nominations for the election of one senator from each of the six faculties to serve on the committee. The full text of the call for nominations appears on the secretariat's Web pages, and will appear in tomorrow's Gazette.

Correction about staff training

Yesterday's Bulletin noted that the fall brochure about staff training and development programs was going out this week. And I made a mistake in part of the announcement, saying that part-time staff have to pay a fee to take part in such programs. "Regular part-time staff can attend seminars at no cost," Katrina Maugham in the human resources department points out. It's temporary staff who are subject to a $100 fee (paid by either themselves or their departments) to attend such programs.

Just a few other things

Job postings continue in the co-op department, as thousands of students look ahead to the winter work term. Also being offered today and tomorrow are a series of "interview skills workshops" (information: ext. 4026).

Another film will be shown tonight as Renison College continues its East Asian Autumn Festival. "Vive l'Amour", a 1994 drama from Taiwan, will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Princess Cinema downtown.

The fall Career Fair -- said by organizers to be Canada's biggest -- takes place tomorrow at Bingemans Conference Centre in Kitchener. Shuttle buses will be running from UW, the career services department says. The fair is sponsored by four post-secondary institutions: UW, Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Guelph, and Conestoga College.
