The official invitation describes it as "a forum in which we will attempt to demonstrate in yet another way our accountability". That's been a powerful word in university affairs for the past year or two, since the Ontario government commissioned a major study on how universities could be more "accountable" -- to the public, directly and through government, and to other groups including staff, students and faculty.
At today's general meeting, three of UW's top leaders will speak:
The Optical Society of America (OSA) is an organization devoted to the diffusion and promotion of information on optical sciences and technology, for a variety of applications. . . .Tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 in room N1042 of the new science building at Wilfrid Laurier University. Our speaker this month is Dr. Costa Douketis; he will entertain us on: "Near-Field Probe Nanoscopy". . . .
Anyone who is interested in optics and its application, and who would like to network with other members from both academia and corporate worlds should attend.
Waterloo Regional Police have not released the identity of a young man, reported to be a third-year UW student, who died yesterday in a fall from a balcony at the Waterloo Towers apartment building on University Avenue. Alcohol is thought to have been involved in the accident.
The employee assistance program sponsors a noon-hour session today titled "Eat Well! How to Enjoy the Holidays Guilt Free". It starts at 12:00 in Math and Computer room 5158.
The UW spinoff company Research in Motion is holding a wine and cheese reception at the University Club today, from 5:30 to 7, for fourth-year and graduate students in such fields as computer science, applied mathematics and engineering. "Find out," the invitation says, "what that company across from the Davis Centre really does."
And finally . . . well, if you'd like to be part of a really big crowd dancing the macarena, and rub Laurier's nose in it, and help the United Way campaign raise a few dollars, all at the same time: block out noon hour tomorrow. "We need about 300 people from the campus community," says Helen Kilbride of the United Way, "to join in the macarena at the Student Life Centre starting at 12 noon on Wednesday." Participating costs a dollar, and the idea is for UW to bring out more macarenists (macaroonies?) than Wilfrid Laurier University, which issued the challenge. Dale a tu cuerpo alegria!
