Star-crossed lovers
The drama department's production of "Romeo and Juliet" opened
last night and runs through Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Theatre of
the Arts. "This version of Shakespeare's most popular tragedy," says
director William Chadwick, "is given a contemporary setting in order
to underline the timelessness of its passions and its conflicting
loyalties." Tickets are $10, students $8, and the box office at
888-4908 will know if there are any still available.

Payday will come early
Faculty and staff who get paid once a month can look forward to getting
their money a little early in December, because of the Christmas holiday,
and also in January. A memo from
payroll manager Carol Wooten has
announced the revised dates:
- Thursday, December 19, for pay that would normally come December
27 (last Friday in the month).
- Friday, January 24, for pay that would normally come January 31.
It's back to normal in February (payday February 28); and in case you
aren't counting the days right now, this month's payday is November 29.
The way the calendar falls, there's no change in pay dates for staff who
are paid biweekly: December 5 and 19, January 2. (And that must mean
that today's a payday too!)
"Casual" pay dates will be December 13, December 19 and January 10.
Rundown of major events
By way of reminder, here are some of the more prominent things
scheduled to happen at UW between now and the holidays:
- UW's first
"annual general meeting" will be held
Tuesday, November 26, at 3:30 p.m. in the Theatre of the Arts.
- The music department's end-of-term concert is Sunday
evening, December 1, at the Centre in the Square.
- Last day of classes is Tuesday, December 3.
- The
staff association holds
its annual general meeting December 4 from 11:30 to 1:00 in Davis Centre
room 1302. (A campus-wide memo from the provost is going out today, asking
department heads to make it "possible for staff members in your
department to attend".)
- Canadian Union of Public Employees local 793 holds its Christmas
dinner-dance December 7 in South Campus Hall.
- The staff association's Winterfest at Columbia Icefield takes
place Sunday afternoon, December 8.
And the official last day of work before Christmas and New Year's is
Monday, December 23. But many, many UW departments will be closing
that day -- check next Wednesday's Gazette for a list of
who's planning to be open and who isn't.
Events in the short term
Ray McLenaghan of the applied math department is giving a talk today
for the pure math club. His topic: the mathematics of light. The event
starts at 3:30 in Math and Computer room 4059.
Breast Cancer Awareness Week continues, and today a "breast health
workshop" runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the
Student Life Centre -- admission free.
The teaching resource office (phone ext. 3132) holds an event for
teaching assistants tomorrow, a workshop on "Documenting Your
Teaching". It runs from 2:30 to 4 in Engineering I room 3516, and
my apologies to any Bulletin readers who were told yesterday that
the event was being held in Math and Computer. A correction has been
made.
