What's with the Latin, and
the bust of the emperor at the top of this page, at least
for those whose web browsers permit such frivolities? Why, today is the
Ides of March, and
we mourn (or celebrate) the 2,039th anniversary of the assassination of
Julius Caesar.
And as for bibendum, or drinking . . . well,
a "huge St. Paddy's bash" is announced for the Bombshelter pub today -- The
Mahones play both day and evening shows.
The Laurel Room has its green-eyed special two days early, what
with St. Patrick's falling on Sunday. From noon to 2 p.m. today,
there are green beans with red peppers, peppercorn steaks and
other good things, price $10.95 for all you can eat. Reservations:
ext. 3196.
A short to-do list
- The drama department's cycle of one-act plays has its final day.
At 12:30 in the studio theatre, Humanities room 180, is "Salt Water
Moon". At 8:00 tonight, the shows are "Top Girls" and "It's Called
the Sugar Plum". Admission: pay-what-you-can.
- Waldemar Janzen speaks at Conrad Grebel College at 12:30 today on
"Old Testament Ethics as a Discipline".
- Tomorrow and Sunday, the University of Guelph holds its annual
College
Royal open house, with everything from wild birds of prey to
edible insects and mediaeval jousting.
People have been asking
. . . about the annual book sale sponsored by the local chapter of the
Canadian Federation of University Women. It's scheduled for April 12
(noon to 9 p.m.) and 13 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at, as always, Hilliard Hall
of First United Church downtown. People who have books to donate can
call 747-5854 or 746-5649.
A knight to remember
That's the theme of the Math Grad Ball, being held tomorrow
night at Bingeman Park as the climactic event for final-year
math students. Says Philip Hunter of the
Math
Graduation Committee:
It's a formal dinner, with a big dance afterwards. It's your way of
saying "yeah, we finally graduated, dammit." . . . Anyone
can go, from any faculty, and from any political persuasion (even
communists!). Of course, you need to buy a ticket to go. . . . The
Math Grad Ball, although it is a formal, isn't like a high school
prom. It's more of a big get-together with all the people
you've shared your joy (and bitter pain) throughout your university
career. It's certainly not a cheezy high school dating game (you
can go to Fed Hall for that).
No comment about the slam at Fed Hall. But have a good time
tomorrow night,
knights and ladies. Nunc est bibendum.
... Speaking of bibendum, the number for Peer Assistance Link Services (a Federation of Students service whose "awareness week" ends today) given here earlier this week was incorrect. The PALS numbers are 888-4860 and 1-800-704-7257.
