WLU faculty ratify new deal

The Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association and the executive committee of WLU's board of governors yesterday ratified a new 3-year collective agreement.

WLU president Lorna Marsden said the new agreement will offer "a period of stability which can only benefit the whole Laurier community."

Prof. Luke Fusco, president of the faculty association, called the agreement "fair to all faculty members" but particularly those at the lower end of the salary scale. The university estimates the new agreement will add about two per cent annually to the university's costs for faculty salaries and benefits.

The agreement provides for an increase in faculty members' salary floors by three per cent in the first year and one per cent in each of the next two years. The new floors are: $30,854 for lecturers; $38,945 for assistant professors; $50,080 for associate professors, and $61,537 for full professors.

UW artists shine

UW grads did well at a major Toronto fine arts exhibition earlier this month.

Lesley Hartley, of the Fine Arts Department, reports that several recent graduates represented Waterloo in excellent fashion at the Toronto Outdoor Exhibition, held at Nathan Phillips Square, July 11 to 14. Eva McCauley (1996 MFA grad) took home the Ernst & Young Best Original Print Award ($500), and the Ernst & Young Purchase Award (up to $500). Mike Wickerson, who graduated in 1995, won the Best Sculpture Award ($1,000) for the second year in a row.

Colleen Dean, a 1996 grad, won the Best Student Award/Honourable Mention, and Laila Binbrek, also a 1996 grad, won the Best Drawing Award.

Hartley says that many other UW students, while shut out on the awards side, sold a number of their works at the exhibition.

In a separate note, Joanna Strong (1996 MFA grad) has been awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award, valued at $10,000.

Fine Arts exhibition in ECH

Still with fine arts, the FA Gallery in East Campus Hall is featuring an exhibition of drawings by UW alum Linda Carson, part of a project for the Status of Disabled Persons Secretariat. The drawings are part of a series of images of people with disabilities in integrated workplaces. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, August 8, 7 - 9 p.m.

Graphics Services hours: a reminder

A second note to say that all Graphics Services copy centres and Graphics Express will open later than usual tomorrow (Aug. 1). These outlets will open at 10 a.m. in order to allow staff to attend a meeting tomorrow morning, 8 - 10 a.m.

Ancillaries open in August

If you thought the Computer Store, Bookstore and UW Shop were closing in August, think again. May Yan, director of retail services, advises that these ancillary enterprises will be open all of August, except the Civic Holiday next Monday.

New hours for the Computer Store are: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. That's a considerable expansion of the previous store hours, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Bookstore and UW Shop will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. This is the time for faculty members to get those fall course notes and lab manuals printed. Also, there's lower pricing on course notes with no copyrights, Yan says.

For information call Montse Sanzsole or Ray Brooks at ext. 3996.

Still with the Bookstore, Steve Brown has joined the staff as the new trade books buyer. You can call Steve at ext. 5680 for information about general books, reference books, recommended or supplementary readings.

Central Stores surplus sale

Central Stores is having a sale of its surplus goods today, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Central Stores depot in East Campus Hall. There are reportedly a lot of new items for sale, but no jewelry. All goods must be removed by sale end.

Also, call Ed Goodwin, central stores, ext. 2821 for information (or to preview) regarding furniture for sale for departments. There's quite a large selection.

Corporate Challenge: Sunday, Sept. 8

A bunch of people saw the notice in Tuesday's Daily Bulletin asking for volunteers for the UW Corporate Challenge Team. They all wanted to know the date of the event, which we neglected to put in the first notice. The Corporate Challenge will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, and, as was noted already, it's at Kinsmen Park in Cambridge. Contact Nancy Elash, community relations, ext. 2220, for information.
