On page 7 of yesterday's Gazette, two names were mixed up in the caption to a photograph of people retiring from the earth sciences department. Marilyn Bisgould was identified as Nadia Bahar, and Nadia Bahar was identified as Marilyn Bisgould. . . .
The five are all former faculty members at various universities, including Ron Sawatsky, who was a vice-president for a time at Conrad Grebel College. "What we envision," says one of them, Martin de Groot, "is a small, tuition-driven, privately funded liberal arts college with a diverse student body, a low student to faculty ratio and moderate tuition levels." They're talking about a downtown institution: "Typically, most Canadian universities are suburban enclaves. This would go right to the heart of the community."
They say there could be support for the development of private colleges in the Ontario government's working paper on post-secondary education, due out next week.
We are a campus-wide initiative that examines various issues on campus and are committed to finding solutions for these concerns. One of the events that SWN planned for this term was a cleanup of Laurel Creek. The scheduled event was originally organized for June 22, 1996. Unfortunately, the cleanup was canceled due to poor weather. But because of its extremely poor water quality, SWN members felt that positive steps were needed in order to improve the Creek. A rescheduled cleanup of Laurel Creek is planned for July 13, 1996. Those interested in helping out are asked to meet by the stairs of the PAC at 10 a.m. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
If you are interested in the SWN but cannot make the cleanup, why not come to one of our meetings? Our next meeting is on Thursday, July 18, at 5:45 in the clubs room. We are always interested in hearing new ideas or concerns. If you would like to reach us electronically, check out our newsgroup at uw.watgreen or email us at watgreen@watserv1.
Chief librarian Murray Shepherd yesterday announced the appointment of an "associate librarian, information services and systems". Mark Haslett, currently at McMaster University, comes to UW August 20 to join "the library's senior management team", which has been pretty attenuated since two associate librarians took early retirement and the previous associate librarian (systems) left for Guelph. . . .
The major event going on this week in the Ron Eydt Village conference centre is a gathering of some 300 people from the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America.
