Staff seat open on UW's board
Nominations are being invited (deadline, February 21) for one of the
two seats on UW's board of governors representing staff members.
Helena Hahn, of the dean of science office, currently holds that
seat; her term ends April 30.
The new term runs for three years beginning May 1.
The official call for nominations
can be found
on UWinfo under "Departments" and then "Secretariat", and will be in
this week's Gazette. Full-time staff
members who are Canadian citizens are eligible for nomination; each
nomination must be signed by five staff members, and received at the
university secretariat by 3 p.m. on the 21st. Nomination forms are
available from the secretariat at ext. 6125.
Performance appraisals will go ahead
There had been suggestions that staff performance appraisals would
be cancelled this year, what with all the budget cuts and other
upheavals that are leading to changes and busyness in UW departments.
But the director of human resources, Catharine Scott, said Friday
that the decision has been made to go ahead with appraisals as usual.
A memo from the provost will be going out to department heads this week,
saying that performance appraisals have been discussed by the advisory
committeee on staff compensation. "The Committe concluded that the
performance appraisal process has never been more important than in
this time of radical change and upheaval," the memo says.
Deadline for the appraisal forms will be April 21.
Power Play starts at noon today
The UW-created drama "Power Play", about harassment in the workplace,
is making its winter tour, with nine performances this week. Today:
12 noon at Notre Dame College, 5:45 p.m. at the Village II cafeteria.
Tomorrow: 12 noon at Renison, 5:30 at the "red" cafeteria in Village I.
Women graduates from mathematics
The women in mathematics committee has a special event set for this
evening: Alumnae Career Night. "Eight female graduates from different
programs in the Faculty of Mathematics will be on hand to talk
about and answer questions about their experiences at Waterloo and
their careers," says Shirley Thomson of the dean of math office.
"The event will be of special interest to undergraduates in
Mathematics." It starts at 7:30 tonight in Math and Computer room 5158.
Information day in arts
Eric Breugst, who works in secondary school liaison for the
faculties of arts, environmental studies and science, puts on his
faculty of arts hat and writes thus:
Once again the Faculty of Arts is holding an "Arts Information Day" to
provide First-Year and Upper-Year Non-Major students in the Faculty with
an opportunity to speak to representatives from the various departments
in Arts about course selection for next year and choosing a major, minor, or
interdisciplinary option. As well, representatives from Career Services,
Counselling Services and Mature Student Services will be on hand to
inform students about the services they provide throughout the year. This
year, Arts Information Day will take place on
Wednesday, February 7,
in the main foyer of the Arts Lecture Hall from 10:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. The atmosphere is informal and all Arts students are encouraged
to drop in and look around. An inexpensive lunch will be provided by the
Arts Student Union.
Conference on ethical issues
"Managing Ethical Issues in Universities and Colleges" is a conference
running today and tomorrow at the Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education, in downtown Toronto. Among the issues under discussion,
according to a brochure: "Who pays; who benefits? Intellectual property.
Integrity in the use of data. Conflict of interest. Balancing rights
and responsibilities. Corporate sponsorship and the dissemination of
knowledge. Academic freedom for whom? The equitable and bias-free
workplace. Academic freedom in an ethical environment. Relationships
between students and their research supervisors. Accountability to whom?"
Also happening in a chilly week
- It's Eating Disorders Awareness Week, with some events scheduled
both locally and in Toronto. The "office of student issues" of the
Federation of Students will be sending buses to Toronto this
afternoon, Wednesaday night and Friday night. Catherine Allen at
ext. 6305 can provide more information.
- The drama department's long-awaited studio show "A Berlin Cabaret"
opens Wednesday night in the Humanities studio. Tickets: ext. 4908.
The Federation of Students election campaign is under way (voting
is February 13-14). As posters go up on blank walls all over campus, I
do believe it's the first time I've seen candidates e-mail addresses
matter-of-factly displayed under their mug shots.
And today is Tu b'Shvat (trees day, in Jewish tradition).
