Dwindling down to a precious few
Fewer cars in the parking lots, fewer people returning phone calls,
fewer places to eat lunch. (The Modern Languages coffee shop is
closed for the season, along with the Festival Room in South Campus
Hall, and the Tim Horton's in Optometry. Today's the last day of
business for the Laurel Room, serving its pre-Christmas lunch, and
the last day for Bon Appetit, the Davis Centre food fair.)
And fewer days before
Christmas
and the long holiday that takes us into 1997. Tomorrow will be the
last working day of '96 for most staff, although UW is officially open
Monday, December 23, and a few departments will be doing their thing.
(Do you realize that 3 out of every 4 staff members make up 75 per
cent of the population?)
Meanwhile, on this cold Thursday
Sharon Lamont, mainstay of the Davis Centre library and the staff
association, is enjoying her last day as a thirtysomething. Other
folks on campus are enjoying (let's hope) their last few
meetings
of the year:
- The joint health and safety committee, convening at 10:30 in
Needles Hall room 3001. On the agenda are bicycles (bicycles are
always on the agenda for the joint health and safety committee)
as well as monthly reports on accidents, fires and safety inspections,
and changes to the Ontario Workers' Compensation Act.
- The Student Affairs Network Group has dubbed its 3:00 meeting
(in the multi-purpose room of the Student Life Centre) a "holiday
gathering", but it certainly looks like a meeting, what with
a review of minutes from the last meeting, "roundtable presentations"
and "other business". A special presentation will be an "overview of
nutrition services available to the community" from Linda Barton,
"our new nutrition consultant" (and I must find out more about that).
This evening, the president of St. Jerome's College will play host
to the annual "informal Christmas reception and dinner" for faculty,
staff and administrators across the campus who have close relations
with St. Jerome's.
And there will be many other social gatherings; if you're in the
University Club at midday, enjoying the buffet and socializing with
your colleagues, you may spot those of us who toil in
information
and public affairs shovelling back some of the stroganoff, salmon
and lasagna.
Honouring the 10-year survivors
"Earlier this year," says a memo from Tricia Loveday in human
resources, "it was unanimously recommended by the Staff Relations
Committee and endorsed by the Vice-President, Academic and Provost that
recognition be given to those staff members celebrating 10 years of
service with the University. For 1996 we are recognizing 66
employees." She's asking department heads to help by "making time
available and encouraging participation".
Word from human resources is that the recognition will involve
taking a group picture in the PAC main gymnasium, on the morning
of January 17. Each of the 66 ten-year veterans will get a copy of
the picture. "If there are staff who reached their ten-year
anniversary of regular service in 1996 but did not receive an
invitation, they are encouraged to call Tricia Loveday at ext. 2078
to be added to the list."

And soon it'll be winter term
Undergraduates are reminded that while on-campus registration,
with all its lineups and hassles, begins January 6, it's possible
to register now and pay by post-dated cheque. Where? The
cashiers' office on the first floor of Needles Hall, if you
get there by tomorrow. (They're closed December 23 and January
2 and 3 -- although drop boxes will be available at the registrar's
office on the 2nd and 3rd.)
