The provincial government is expected today to announce guidelines for the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund.
The trust fund, unveiled in the provincial budget last May, is an attempt to boost the amount of non-repayable financial assistance colleges and universities can offer students. The announcement in Thunder Bay is to be made this afternoon by Education Minister John Snobelen.
The fund aims to encourage companies and individuals to donate money for student financial assistance. The province will match the donations, dollar-for-dollar.
In 1994-95, Ontario's colleges and universities spent a total of about $39 million of their operating budgets on scholarships, bursaries and other forms of student assistance. An additional $39 million was available from trusts and endowments set up at the institutions by benefactors.
Here's your chance to be on TV -- Roger's Cable 20 is seeking people to produce a slew of new programs.
"Students and others on campus might be interested in being part of our new look," said Margot Whittet, producer for the community station. "We're looking for individuals who possess enthusiasm and energy, and no experience is necessary."
As part of a new plan, the local station is forging ties with Roger's stations in Guelph and Brantford to produce a greater variety of programming for the fall. For example, the station wants to increase news coverage, with stories from all three cities, for a weekday nightly newscast.
The station has openings for on-air personalities, reporters and camera operators. Professional training is provided in all aspects of television production, covering everything from videography to scriptwriting.
Whittet said that evening workshops are being held for the next couple of weeks. To register, call the station's response line (and leave a message) at 893-7978.
You can register on-line after seeing what's in store for UW's Faculty Development Days to be held Sept. 5-6.
The full program of the annual teaching and learning event is accessible through the Teaching Resources and Continuing Education (TRACE) Website.
"The sessions are open to all those interested in teaching and learning," said Verna Keller, administrative assistant for TRACE. While at the site, visitors can pre-register through the on-line form.
This year, workshop topics will include Technology and the Learning Environment, Smart Strategies for a Safe and Open Classroom, Teaching in the Compressed Video-conferencing Classroom, and Balancing Teaching, Research and Personal Lives.
A utility shutdown is taking place today at Village 1, turning off both soft water and hot water.
UW's plant operations staff are modifying the soft water piping until 4 p.m. During the shutdown, cold hard water will remain on.
How to improve the quality of learning is the objective of a conference being held today and tomorrow at the Ron Eydt Village.
The Learning for Life conference, sponsored by the Waterloo County Board of Education, looks at quality instruction and the best practices in the classroom.
Speakers include Don Meichenbaum, a retired UW psychology professor, and education experts Mike Reardon and Peter Kline.
