Buskers begin carnival tomorrow

The buskers are back again and the fun begins tomorrow afternoon in Uptown Waterloo.

About 15 performers, who are staying at UW's Ron Eydt Village, will be entertaining the crowds until Sunday in the eighth annual Waterloo Busker Carnival. Among them are jugglers, magicians, acrobats, and musicians.

"A showcase of international street performers, promising exciting, energetic entertainment for all ages will hit King Street," said Charlotte Leib, director of marketing for the city.

The event kicks off Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with a free community barbecue at the corner of King and Erb Streets, followed by preview busker performances until 11 p.m. on the Parkade Pitch stage. Bleachers will be set up for the first time in front of the stage, located across from Waterloo Square.

Busker performances continue Friday from noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 1 a.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Leib said the buskers receive money from the audience by passing the hat after each performance.

A special children's play area, featuring a kiddie midway, face painting and free balloons as well as rides, gets under way Friday at King and William Streets.

For adults, the festival will hold a late-night show at 11:30 p.m. on the Parkade Pitch stage. "This is a chance for the buskers to produce their own hilarious show, complete with grown-up entertainment and the element of surprise," Leib said.

The carnival closes on Sunday, with a family-style vaudeville show. That event takes place on the Parkade Pitch stage, beginning at 4 p.m.

Seeking a volunteer librarian

Wanted: a volunteer librarian.

"A local living history museum requires a librarian," said Sue Coulter, recruitment officer for the Volunteer Action Centre. The volunteer will catalogue new books and periodicals, using the Dewy decimal system and Library of Congress headings.

The librarian position calls for a time commitment of one-half day each week for least one year. A candidate with previous library training or work experience is preferred.

"This is an interesting chance to use your skill to help out your community," Coulter said. For details on the position (number 123), call 742-8610.

Education panel holds hearings

Ontario's panel on post-secondary education will not be visiting the Waterloo-Guelph area as part of province-wide hearings announced yesterday.

The panel, due to report to Education Minister John Snobelen by Dec. 15, is to advise on the future direction for Ontario's college and university system, currently under siege from severe cuts in government grants.

The five-member panel will hold meetings in Hamilton on Oct. 16, Toronto (Oct. 17) and London (Oct. 30), but not in the Waterloo-Guelph area, home of three universities and one community college.

It will begin hearings in Thunder Bay on Sept. 25, then travel to Sudbury (Sept. 26) and Ottawa (Oct. 10). The final hearing will be held in North York on Oct. 31.

Executive heads of colleges and universities are being asked to suggest names of individuals, including students, faculty and staff, available to meet with the panel. The panel will also meet provincial organizations and other groups.

"We are keenly interested in hearing from -- and listening to -- the broad range of Ontarians who share an interest in the future of Ontario colleges and universities," said David Smith, panel chair and principal emeritus of Queen's University.

"Our schedule is tight, but we are open to any and all suggestions that will enable us to achieve a post-secondary system based on excellence, accessibility and accountability."

The panel is seeking comments on three issues facing post-secondary education:
