The American Psychological Association honored UW Prof. Mark Zanna yesterday for his "outstanding contribution to the professional development of graduate students."
As winner of the Raymond D. Fowler Award, Zanna was selected from nominees across North America. He received the award at the association's 104th annual convention in Toronto, which ends Tuesday.
The event, attended by more than 13,000 psychologists, is presenting 1,100 symposiums, with topics covering almost everything from children's issues to elderly issues, drug abuse to body piercing, and how best to deal with the effects of corporate downsiz ing on individuals.
A member of UW's Psychology department since 1975, Zanna's nomination was supported by graduate students and colleagues from Canada and the United States.
Educators are expected to pick up some pointers on teaching entrepreneurship at a conference beginning today on campus.
The week-long event, put on by the Canadian Industrial Innovation Centre/Waterloo, is expected to draw about 50 teachers from secondary schools and community colleges.
Two other conferences under way today at UW and lasting for much of this month are the Teachers' Association Annual Dance Schools, with more than 250 participants, and the Ontario Mennonite Music Camp for young people aged 12-15.
The finishing touches are being put on the program for this year's Faculty Development Days to be held Sept. 5-6.
"The sessions are open to all interested parties," said Verna Kellar, of the Teaching Resources and Continuing Education (TRACE) office , adding that further information will be available later this month. The event is sponsored by TRACE and the Faculty Association.
Last fall, the program featured a presentation on teaching and learning, classroom strategies and an overview of "instructional multimedia."
Kellar said that a web site is being created for the annual event, complete with program details.
The water is running cold today in the Ron Eydt Village, formerly known as Village 2.
The reason? There's a utility shutdown to allow plant operations staff to inspect the domestic hot water tank in the central complex of the residence. The inspection is scheduled to be over by 4 p.m.
