Halfway there

As the income managers conference kicks off in the Conference Centre, there's a weather advisory out today on this rather hot day which is the official halfway point of summer. People with respiratory problems are being advised to stay indoors today because Environment Canada is issuing an air quality advisory for much of Southern Ontario. Temperatures are expected in the mid-30s, reaching as high as 40° C with the humidity factored in.

And yes, it is officially the midpoint of summer: at 6:12 p.m., EDT, 46 days, 19 hours and 48 minutes will have elapsed and the equivalent will remain before 2 p.m. EDT, Sept. 22, the autumnal equinox and the beginning of autumn.

But in case you think it's hot today, the Toronto Star quotes Bryan Smith, a climatologist with Environment Canada, saying that "we've had one of the coolest summers ever." It's part of an overall story which follows the theme that we've had "wacky weather" the past couple of years, especially last winter (very cold and long) and this summer (very wet and cool).

New Feds Ombudsperson

Federation of Students president Mario Bellabarba sends along a note to say that the federation has hired a new Ombudsperson to fill in for Marianne Miller while she's away on academic leave (Sept. - April). The new Ombudsperson is Angela Cheung, who will be training with Marianne for the next month. The Ombudsperson is available to faculty and staff, as well as students, and the office is located in the Student Life Centre. The phone extension is x2402.

Exams, or not exams . . .

Exams already on

We tried to say last Friday that spring/summer term lectures would soon end and exams would start. Well, that's what it says in the calendar, official schedule for the university's life. However, more current information -- including feedback from an intrepid reader -- suggests that that's all changed. Exams have already started -- on July 31, in fact. They run through until August 13.

Registrar's Office shutdown

The Registrar's Office will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, August 7) and Thursday, August 22, from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on both days. The staff will be attending staff development seminars.

Elderhostel starts

Elderhostel gets underway today at Conrad Grebel College and runs until Saturday, August 10. Elderhostel is the summer learning academy set up especially for seniors. It's part of a network of such Elderhostel programs offered by many colleges and universities throughout Canada and the U.S. It gives seniors a chance to taste academic life on campus while visiting new locations in various parts of the country. In addition to courses (including "Life, Death and Health -- Bioethical Decision-Making in the '90s" and "Ontario Mennonite History", the program includes all meals and accommodation. The courses are non-credit and involve no exams or homework. The Conrad Grebel program also includes various activities, such as: campus tour; healthy eating session; movie & popcorn night; reception; evening storytelling; day trip to St. Jacobs; tour of Castle Kilbride; line dancing and a graduation banquet. For more information call Paul Penner at (519) 885-0220, ext. 231. (This is the second of two programs. The first was offered in June.)

Notice to co-op students

Co-op students who are still without employment for the Fall 1996 work term, but have not handed in a completed skills and interests form together with 20 resume packages, cannot be properly assisted by Co-op Education staff with their job search. As explained in the Continuous Phase Important Dates handout, these students will have their work term status changed to "On own - Self Imposed." The status change date has been extended to August 7.

This means that, for these students, any upcoming co-op interviews arranged through Co-op Education will be cancelled, the ability to log into the Student Access System for the remainder of the term will be lost, and no co-op credit will be recorded for the Fall 1996 work term.

If you are one of the students in this situation your status can be changed by either:

- contacting Co-op Reception, NH 1101 to inform us that you have arranged employment for the Fall 1996 term (along with details of the employment);

- or handing in to Co-op Reception a completed skills and interests form together with 20 resume packages.

Birthday greetings

Belated best birthday wishes to Elizabeth Vinnicombe of the Office of Research who celebrated on the weekend. Hope it's a good year Liz.
