Waller returns to Needles Hall
Gary Waller of
the psychology department, who was interim dean of
research through 1994-95, will be the new associate provost (academic
and student affairs), a memo yesterday announced.
He starts work in that role tomorrow, taking over responsibilities
from Robin Banks, currently associate provost (academic affairs), and
Peter Hopkins, associate provost (student affairs).
His position is considered number three in UW's hierarchy, after the
president and the provost.
Said yesterday's memo from the president and provost:
Gary Waller received his PhD in Psychology from Vanderbilt University in
1967, and has been a member of the faculty here since 1968. He served
as Chair of the Department of Psychology for over ten years, and more
recently as Dean of Research for a year and a half. Gary is one of the
instructors in the FrontLine Leadership program, and has offered
numerous workshops to UW faculty and staff.
As Associate Provost, Gary will have overall responsibility for the
Library, the Registrar's Office, Co-Operative Education and Career
Services, Distance and Continuing Education, TRACE, and the Audio-Visual
Centre. He will share, with the Associate Provost, Human Resources,
responsibility for maintaining close liaison with student leaders.
We look forward to working with Gary Waller in this senior position, and
we are confident that he will have your full cooperation and support.
From another new executive
Here's a note from
Jay Black, who
takes office tomorrow as associate
provost (information systems and technology):
I would like to extend an open invitation to members of the UW
community to contact me about any aspect of Information Systems and
Technology. My phone number remains ext. 5474, and e-mail to
jpblack@uwaterloo.ca will continue to reach me. As of May 1, my
office will be in MC 6258 (Bud Walker's former office).
Over the next two weeks, I will make every effort to make myself
available in my office at the following times: Wednesday, May 1 and
May 8, 9:30-11:30 (if not pre-empted); Thursday, May 2 and May 9,
2:00-4:00; Friday, May 3, 10:30-11:30; Mondays from May 6, 9:30-11:30;
Tuesday, May 7, 1:30-3:30.
The new financial system
As departments get a look at the new "accounting flexfields", they'll
see an awful lot of zeroes. One of my accounts, for instance, seems
to be 5370-100-100-0000-000000-4135-000-000. On most forms, if there's
a block of zeroes you can just leave the whole section blank, say the
sympathetic folks from the
financial
systems project, and it will default to 000.
Reminder: there are telephone helplines for the new financial system
at ext. 5328 (general) and ext. 5232 (research), and an e-mail
helpdesk at fsp-help@mc4adm.
Some brief announcements
- Students can register today for the spring term, and I noticed
a good-sized lineup at one point yesterday outside the cashiers' office
on the first floor of Needles Hall. Tomorrow through Friday, registration
moves to the second floor of NH, and there's a rule: engineers register
on Wednesday, arts and math students on Thursday, other undergrads
on Friday.
- The library starts operating on
spring term
hours as of tomorrow. Briefly: the Dana Porter Library will be
open 8 a.m.to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday,
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. The Davis
Centre library opens at the same time each day but stays open one
hour later each night.
- "May 3 is our deadline," writes Wayne Gadsby of financial
services, "for getting the Faculty Professional Allowance claim
forms in to Financial Services for the fiscal year ending April 30, 1996."
I did hear from somebody
In yesterday's Bulletin I asked whether there were any co-op students
on brand-new jobs who were checking in for the news from Waterloo. A note
arrived from one person who qualifies, accounting student Malik
Datardina. "Yes, on this gray Monday I began my co-op career," the
note says. "However, I was luckier than most -- I do not have to go off
campus to find my co-op job. I found a great job in the Fed office. This
summer should be fun."
Now all we need is some sunshine!
