Report on Friday's protest
Ultimately, there was a protest as everyone knows by now. Reports from campus and at the Community Day of Action rally in Waterloo and Kitchener indicate it was one of the most peaceful and uneventful held in the province to date.
After the speeches, the gathering of about 600 marched from campus around the ring road to join with other Community Day of Action participants in uptown Waterloo. Chief organizer Stan Fogel called the day a success and told the campus rally that Premier Mike Harris would be presented with a Dishonorable Degree (unfurled to cheers) later this fall, after thousands in the education sector had signed it.
Earth Day celebrations today
The world keeps turning, and
today is Earth Day
(although some places the celebrations came yesterday instead, and
others stretch it out to a full week).
About the only thing happening on campus for the occasion, it appears,
is a discussion at Conrad Grebel College tonight (7:00) under the
title "How Can the United Nations Be Revitalized?"
On a wider front, here's what
the World Wildlife Fund has
to say:
This Earth Week, take a minute to say thank you to the individuals,
corporations, govenrments and organizations who you know are actively
working to protect the environment.
If your municipal government is doing a goodj ob protecting sensitive
natural areas from development, then tell them you appreciate their
efforts. If your local grocer makes a point of stocking food produced
without harmful pesticides and herbicides, thank him or her. Look around
and find a few ways to respond positively to the initiatives that
others are taking for a better environment.
Teaching and learning events
Two events are taking place on Thursday:
- The
teaching
resource office
offers a workshop on "Method, Laboratories, Case Studies: A First
Course in Statistics", involving R. J. Mackay and R. W. Oldford of the
statistics and actuarial science department. They'll talk about
Stats 231 ("in the larger historical context of scientific method
and explanation"). It starts at 1:15 in Math and Computer room 5136.
To register: trace@watserv1, or ext. 3132.
- The
distance
education office is bringing in
a satellite teleconference on Quality Distance Education,
sponsored by the University of Wisconsin ("present and future
distance education efforts, what we have learned and where we go
from here"). It runs from 2 to 4 in Davis Centre room 1302.
Information and registration: jmoser@corr1, or ext. 2025.
Where the jobs are
Here's a note from Kerry Mahoney, who manages the
career
information centre in Needles Hall:
I am interested
in finding out what web job sites people on campus have found for
various faculties/disciplines. I understand that some UW pages have
made links to valuable
job listings and I would like to hear about them. Our job listings page is
very well used by students who are in the job search process. Perhaps
those on campus could let me know of sites as they find htem and I
could add them to our Career Services page as well. My e-mail
address is kmahoney@nh1adm.
And this just in
The hot water shutdown in Matthews Hall that began this morning
is scheduled to continue until 4 p.m. tomorrow. (Or as they say
on television: Celluloid factory explodes -- no film at eleven.)
