United Way campaign begins
If the staff you encounter today are in their grubbies, there's a reason:
Dress-Down Day, being encouraged to draw attention and enthusiasm for the
on-campus
United Way campaign.
The campaign gets under way today, and is seeking to collect $160,000
during October. "Thanks to your generosity," a leaflet tells the 1994
donors, "hope replaced despair in many lives." And the same can happen
this year. Pledge forms are being distributed to staff and faculty by
department representatives.
Happy Michaelmas, happy payday
Plenty of things are goin' on today:
- At noon, in Needles Hall 3004, Aubrey Diem of the geography department
shows excerpts from a new video movie based on his book First Rains
of Autumn, set in the winter in the Swiss Alps. Also: "Learn how to
create a CD-ROM with sound and narration using your own slides."
- The Global Connections export seminar series sponsored by the
co-op
department gets going at 1:00 today. Last-minute information:
ext. 2494.
- Avraham Sela, visiting UW from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
speaks on "State and Society in the Middle East", at 2:00 in Humanities
room 178.
- The Japanese animation club, which calls itself
CTRL-A, the Club
That Really Likes Anime, has its first movie night of the fall term,
from 4:30 to 10:30 in Engineering Lecture room 101.
- Job posting number 3 for winter co-op jobs will be available starting
at 10 a.m.; it expires Monday evening.
- Mike Something, with special guest Dayna Manning, plays
the Bombshelter pub in the Student Life Centre tonight.
New things on the Web
A couple of important documents that have appeared to the World Wide
Web in the past few days:
There's a long, long trail
It's called the Laurel Trail, and it runs through Waterloo from downtown
past the UW campus, through the north campus and up to the Laurel Creek
conservation area. The trail, sponsored by the city government, has its
official opening Sunday at 2 p.m. at City Hall, corner of Regina and
William Streets. Among the VIPs will be Roger Downer, UW's
vice-president (university relations).
After the ceremonies, there will
be a chance to walk the trail's six-kilometre length.
Members of UW's
Outers
Club will be volunteering in the UW portion of the trail, which
runs along the railway tracks on the east side of campus, then up past
the Brubacher House museum and along the creek through the north campus.
Everybody's invited -- and the Brubacher House will be open to visitors
from 2 to 4 p.m. (adults $1).
And also on Saturday
- UW's first triathlon, starting tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a swim in
the Physical Activities Complex pool, followed by biking and then
running around the ring road.
- The St. Jerome's Charity Run, which starts at 4 p.m. today from
the college's Siegfried Hall, continues through Sunday evening. Meanwhile:
all-night movies tonight at Notre Dame College, a carnival from 10 to
3 tomorrow at St. Jerome's, and a pub and casino Saturday night, all
to help raise money for the Global Community Centre.
Say, aren't the charity runners going to be competing with the
triathlon crowd for space on the ring road?
- A programming contest, sponsored by the
Computer Science
Club, to select UW team members for the ACM programming contests
later this winter. A second preliminary contest is set for October 14.
Excitement at University Stadium
It's "Bell Canada Gold and Black Day" at University Stadium (formerly
Seagram Stadium) tomorrow afternoon as the football Warriors meet
McMaster University's Marauders. Says Jennifer McCormick of the
athletics
department: "The Fan of the Game (wearing and showing the most
spirit) will walk away with a $500 Via Rail travel voucher! Five
contestants will be selected and the winner will be by audience
cheering at the half-tme. Enter the free draw by Bell Canada and
you could win a cool Mickey Mouse telephone valued at over $100, or
lots of other great merchandise. Fed Hall has billed Saturday night
as the Post-Game Bash and will be decorating the place up in gold
and black with a Varsity spirit all night."
Sunday, as the soccer Athenas and Warriors face Western, it'll be
Burger King Day with "random free giveaways". Those games are at
Columbia Field: the women's game at 1:00, the men's at 3:00.
Downey's day in court
Sunday sees the third annual Downey Tennisfest, honouring
UW president James Downey and
giving faculty, alumni, staff and retirees a chance to play round-robin
doubles and dine at the Waterloo Tennis Club.
