L'shana tova tikosenu

"May we be enrolled for a good year" -- a greeting for Rosh Hashanah, the first day of the Jewish year 5756, which began at sunset last night. Many Jewish staff, students and faculty will be observing the New Year holiday today and tomorrow; Yom Kippur, the "day of atonement", comes at the end of the High Holidays, on Wednesday, October 4.

President's meeting is today

Department heads, association presidents and other key people on campus will be meeting at 3:30 today in Needles Hall room 3001. The invitation went out from the president, James Downey, and the provost, Jim Kalbfleisch: "Attend a meeting to discuss the financial outlook and possible actions that might be taken." It'll be another month or so before the Ontario government produces a budget or a fiscal plan, with details on how it will change government funding in the next couple of years, but statements from Queen's Park are pretty consistently saying that there's going to be less money for public-sector institutions to spend.

Swim, bicycle and run

UW's first-ever triathlon is scheduled for this Saturday (open only to Waterloo students, faculty and staff). The event starts at 9 a.m. and will use the Physical Activities pool and the ring road. And here's more about it, as posted to newsgroups by one of the organizers, science student Alan Chan:
A lot of individual athletes have entered, but many 'weekend' warriors can take heart in that there the is a relay team category! Assemble a three person team and you only have to do one of the three events (swim/bike/run).

The distances are: Swim 800 yards (16 laps PAC pool), Bike 20K (8 laps Ring Rd), Run 5K (2 laps Ring Rd)

There will be prizes and post-race festivities. This is a good event for those who have never raced before! The cost is $15 to enter and registration is still being accepted through Campus Recreation.

Chan notes that volunteers are needed to help with the event. Anybody interested can e-mail him at adfchan@science.watstar, or attend a meeting today at 7:30 in room 229 of the Student Life Centre.
