To talk about hard times
UW's president and provost sent out a memo yesterday inviting
department heads and chairs, and leaders of faculty, staff and
student groups, to a meeting on Monday:
Recent newspaper reports have predicted large grant reductions across
Ontario's broader public sector in 1996-97 and beyond. These are still
rumours, and we do not expect a definitive government statement until
late October or early November. Nevertheless, it now appears likely that
Ontario universities will have their funding significantly reduced.
You are invited to attend a meeting to discuss the financial outlook
and possible actions that might be taken to meet this challenge.
The meeting is happening in Needles Hall Monday at 3:30.
Parking spaces available
Elaine Koolstra, manager of parking services (whose comments about
her department are featured on the front page of today's Gazette),
advises that there are "student" parking spaces available at the
moment
in lots N, R, W and A. The cost is $74.40 per term.
Koolstra also sends word that the parking office will be closed on
Friday afternoon (from 1 to 4:30 p.m.) for a department meeting.
Things that are happening
- Peter Forsyth, director of UW's
Institute
for Computer Research,
is the speaker this evening at a meeting of the Canadian Information
Processing Society. His topic: "Toxic Waste in Your Back Yard -- Can
Computer Simulation Help?" The meeting will be in the Davis Centre
(rooms 1301 and 1302) from 4:30 to 7:30. Information: Bruce Hay, 886-3700.
- A meeting tomorrow at noontime will discuss plans for the new
"bicycle centre" on the lower level of the Student Life Centre.
Anyone interested is welcome, says Michael Zuliani, a systems design
engineering student who is co-chairing the project along with Wayne Ho.
The meeting starts at 12 noon in SLC room 229; Zuliani can be reached
for more information at mjzulian@systems.watstar.
- In Toronto today and tomorrow, there's a conference on
"university-industry synergy", jointly sponsored by the
Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Conference Board of
Canada. Advertisements for the event say that such cooperation is "as
natural as mother's milk . . . Canada's universities and Canadian
industry team up to develop new and better ways of doing things --
creating new products to keep Canada and Canadians competitive. Creating
new job opportunities. Creating wealth." See this morning's Gazette
for a little more about the conference.
- The
bookstore is sponsoring
"Septemberfest" this week, hosted by
Prentice Hall Canada Inc. Says
Hank Ackema of the store's staff: "Prentice Hall, which publishes the
majority of the books concerning Windows '95, will be on hand doing
demonstrations, giving away merchandise and promoting Windows '95
books." Activities continue through Friday.
About jobs and rooms
Two notes of special interest to students:
- Co-op students who are seeking jobs for the winter term can get
their "master copy co-op record" starting at 10:00 today in the
co-op department in
Needles Hall.
- Rooms are available in both Village I and Village II this term.
Anyone interested can check with the housing office (it's in Village
II) or call ext. 3704 or 3705.
Finally, the Feds
Fed Awareness Week continues, drawing attention to the many services
offered by the
Federation
of Students. Today and tomorrow, it's Clubs Days in the Student
Life Centre.
