See the earth move
Earth-moving machines with horses pulling them -- that, along with
antiques, farm technology, entertainment and plenty of food, will be the
attraction of the
International Plowing Match,
which opens tomorrow as
the biggest tourist event in Waterloo Region in years.
There's even a UW display, says Lorraine Albrecht in the
earth
sciences department. She writes:
Visit tent GR43 at the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery
Show. . . . This tent includes exhibits from the Waterloo Centre for
Groundwater Research, Earth Sciences Museum, and Groundwater Education
Ontario. The Groundwater tent is highlighted as one of the "must see"
exhibits for the school visitors.
The Plowing Match runs Tuesday through Saturday at a site just north of
Ayr (south of Kitchener and Cambridge). Simplest directions to the
site: south and west on the Conestoga Parkway, south on Trussler Road.
The show is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and huge crowds are expected --
the goal is 150,000 visitors over the five days -- so there's shuttle
service from the parking lots to the Tented City site. Admission is
$10 for adults, $5 for children. (There's also free child care.)
Says the Plowing Match publicity: "It is a trade show that
transcends tradition! More than six hundred
exhibitors line the streets of Tented City. Add to that a trailer park, crop
showcases, the historical and antique shows, exhibits of new
technology, tours and learning groups, lifestyle and craft shows -- even
a fully-staffed daycare centre, and you'll see that the International
Plowing Match offers something for everyone."

Chemist will speak tonight
Arthur Carty, former dean of research at UW and now president of the
National
Research Council, will speak tonight at Wilfrid Laurier University.
He's the last in a series of speakers helping to celebrate the opening
of WLU's new science building on King Street, and will give his talk
in room N1001 of the new building at 8 p.m.
Title of Carty's talk: "Chemistry: Good Training for Almost Anything: A
Cluster Chemist's View of Research, Politics, Science Funding and Ottawa".
Registration for fitness activities
Today's the day to sign up for aerobics classes, swimming lessons
and the many other instructional activities of the
campus
recreation program in the athletics department. Step one: go to
the Blue South corner of the Physical Activities Complex between 8:30
a.m. and 1 p.m. today and pick up a registration ticket that can be
used later today or tomorrow.
Distant students head for UW
This weekend will see the annual open house for UW's thousands of
distance
education students. They'll meet each other in social events, take part
in study skills workshops, and maybe see that professor face-to-face
who's been only a voice until now.
The central event of the weekend is a "course fair" on Saturday which,
along with the seminars, is open to the public. (An ad making that
invitation is to appear tonight in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record.)
Academic advisors and representatives of such departments as the
library and the mature student services office will be on hand for the
fair, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday in the Davis
Centre great hall.
Avril McVicar of the distance ed office says departments are still being
encouraged to get involved; they can call her at ext. 2002 or Janet Moser
at ext. 2025 for more information.
More things are happening
Also today:
- The university senate meets tonight, at 7:30 p.m. in Needles
Hall room 3001.
- As job interviews draw closer, the co-op department today begins
a "peer resume proofreading" service. Says a memo: "Students wishing
their resume proofread should go to Co-op Reception for information on
availability of proofreaders. Proofreading available through the week.
Students should bring an updated copy of their resume, along with
their Co-op Student Reference Manual."
Oh, and don't forget that work term reports are due at 4:30 tomorrow.
- The
Federation of Students
is sponsoring "Fed Awareness
Week" starting today. The volunteer fair that had been announced
for today is cancelled ("technical difficulties", I'm told), but
there's an open house in the "services area" of the Student Life
Centre, where the Federation houses such services as its Food Bank
and the peer counselling service. Clubs Days run Wednesday and Thursday.
- The Student Alumni Association is in full swing again. Math
and physics student Andrea McPhee is this term's president; she
writes: "The Student Alumni Association is a group of top students
contributing to
campus spirit by bridging the gap between yesterday's students and
tomorrow's alumni. We are having our first general meeting today
from 4:30-5:30 in the Student Life Centre (SLiCe), room 229. All are
welcome -- come and find out how you can help with Homecoming, Final Exam
Survival Kits, and other fun events."
