On the first day of classes,
the bookstore gave to me
a Visa bill and a cookie.
Well, almost. The Visa bill comes from the
bookstore all right, as an inevitable
feature of the first week of classes. But the cookie is a fringe
benefit -- "a stuffed, freshly baked cookie", to quote John
Cunningham of the food services department. He says food services will
be handing out the cookies free of charge to students standing in
bookstore lineups in the South Campus Hall concourse.
Cunningham has more news from food services:
Tim Hortons Optometry
is now open selling coffee, donuts, muffins, sandwiches and soup.
It is on the third floor of that building.
We have issued over 10,000 new ID cards so far and it looks
like another 10,000 next week. We will be issuing these cards
in the Student Life Building and at the Watcard office.
We will be open in the Student Life Building until 7 p.m.
both Tuesday and Wednesday night for students that are
not on campus during the day.
We have authentic Greek food all next week at Brubakers.
Yes, classes are starting
New students will be puzzling over maps this morning, and trying to
figure out how room 101 of the Engineering Lecture Hall can be on
two different floors at the same time. Returning students will just be
puzzling over their schedules.
And those who haven't yet registered ought to get busy, since late fees
are now piling up at $3 a day. Registration has moved back to Needles
Hall from the Physical Activities Complex.
To repeat a reminder that I posted last week: just because you've given
your current address to the registrar's office, you shouldn't believe
that
the library
knows it too. The two agencies keep separate address
files, so you should stop by a library circulation desk to record any
change of address.
Faculty workshop on research
The
research office
is holding a "Workshop for New Faculty" (although
continuing faculty are welcome too) tomorrow from 8:30 to noon. The
workshop offers, a memo explains, "a forum for new faculty to receive
and discuss information about the mandates of the
three major granting councils (NSERC, MRC and SSHRC) as well as
specific details about their respective application and review
procedures. In addition, it will be an opportunity for attendees to
informally meet members of the Office of Research and hear about the
services we provide."
Tomorrow's workshop will take place in Needles
Hall room 3004. Information: Andrew Barker in the research office,
phone ext. 6040.
A reminder for graduate students
Says the payroll office: "If you are being paid as a teaching or research
assistant in the fall term and you were not on the monthly payroll in
spring 1995, please sign up for payroll." You can do it today
from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Arts Lecture room 113, or tomorrow
from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Math and Computer room 2065. "Please
bring your Social Insurance Number and bank account information."
First monthly payday for the fall term is September 29.
About privacy and information
UW has issued a set of "Privacy Protection/Freedom of Information
Guidelines" that are intended to bring the university within the spirit
of the provincial law on privacy and openness. They promise "maximum
access to UW records, which are under the control of University
administrative officers, to the extent that it is possible without
compromising the integrity of the institution or its members, or
prejudicing its ability to operate at an optimal level".
Doesn't look as though I will be able to get the Guidelines into this
week's Gazette, but look for them next week. They may be available
electronically by that time too. Paper copies were sent to all department
heads and chairs on Friday.
As part of the process,
UW is appointing a "University Commissioner for Privacy Protection
and Freedom of Information", who will be Susan Sykes, head of the
human and animal research section in the office of research.
Rollin' down the road
Truck safety is the focus of discussion as some 100 regulators,
carriers, enforcement officials, truck manufacturers and researchers
gather in Toronto, today through Wednesday. They're attending a
conference on "Truck Safety: Perceptions and Reality", organized
by UW's
Institute
for Risk Research.
