The chariots race today

Engineers' "chariots" were out in the arts quadrangle yesterday, and this afternoon it's a campus-wide chariot race around the Dana Porter Library -- one of the livelier traditional activities of orientation week. (Verb. sap. from the safety office: make sure your car isn't parked in the vicinity of Porter or Arts Lecture between 3 and 4 this afternoon.)

The chariot races are preceded by Frosh Olympics, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Columbia Field. Tonight: a "Bible Belt Bash" at Federation Hall, for church college students, and other social activities.

Tomorrow, as orientation winds up or winds down, comes Green Spirit Days, starting at 10 a.m. and centred on East Campus Hall, from which squads of volunteers will be dispatched to help with environmental projects around Kitchener-Waterloo. (I'd give more details if I had them.)

And then, a football game

The football Warriors host the University of Western Ontario Mustangs tomorrow afternoon at University Stadium (formerly Seagram Stadium). Western is favoured to repeat as OUAA champions this year, but Waterloo (described by the Star yesterday as "pesky") is among the teams that are out to surprise them. The game starts at 2 p.m. But there's more than just football, says Jennifer McCormick of the athletics department:
Be sure to come early and soak up the sights and sounds of the Pre-Game Kick-Off Party happening from noon to 2 p.m. in the University Stadium parking lot. The KOOL-FM Star Cruiser will be there with great rock and roll cranked up, along with our other sponsor, Burger King, to offer lots of giveaways for our fans. Barbecue burgers, hot dogs, pizza slices and cold drinks will be available for purchase. There will be appearances by our UW cheerleaders, the Warrior Band and of course our own Waterloo Warrior, and other surprises. At the half, the Cambridge Minor Football League will be playing a mini-game to entertain the fans, and three lucky fans will be chosen to attempt to catch the football from the football tossing machine.
Students: admission free. Others: season tickets available from the athletics department, phone ext. 5869, or tickets at the gate.

Sunday, things wind down

A few final orientation activities are happening Sunday, the schedule says, and "Atomic Improv" plus "Scared Weird Little Guys" play at Federation Hall from 7 p.m. Gotta get some rest before Monday morning at 8:30, folks.

Symposium on a muscle disease

The annual symposium of the Malignant Hyperthermia Association is being held at UW tomorrow. Valerie Horner of the kinesiology department is among the organizers of this event, which will air both research findings and practical information about a little-known muscle abnormality. Last-minute information and registration: 579-8498.

A note to graduate students

Says the payroll office: "If you are being paid as a teaching or research assistant in the fall term and you were not on the monthly payroll in spring 1995, please sign up for payroll." You can do it on Monday, September 11, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Arts Lecture room 113, or Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Math and Computer room 2065. "Please bring your Social Insurance Number and bank account information." First monthly payday for the fall term: September 29.

Sign of the times in higher education

From Academe Today's Daily Report, distributed earlier this week by the Chronicle of Higher Education: "President Clinton said in a speech Monday at the dedication of California State University at Monterey Bay that its conversion from an Army base is a good example of the United States' shift to 'a more information-based, technology-based economy'. The university's classrooms, dormitories, and offices are wired with fiber-optic cable, giving access to the university library and the Internet."

And some final notes

Faculty Development Days continue today, with sessions on instructional multimedia. There's also the Instructional Multimedia Fair, open to all, from 10:15 to 3:00 in Davis Centre room 1301.

And birthday greetings to Don Brodie of the physics department. Don't want to throw a chill over the party or anything, but the Environment Canada folks have issued a frost warning for tonight.
