Start the day with a warning
UW police chief Al MacKenzie phoned this morning to ask me to spread
a piece of good advice: Keep your valuables within sight. A university
campus isn't immune to thieves. Yesterday afternoon, for instance,
somebody stepped into an office in the Optometry building, rifled
through a knapsack and took away some of its contents, including a
credit card, which had already been used by the time the owner
discovered it was missing. Keep your eyes on your fries.
Orientation week continues
It doesn't seem like the finest of weather for environmental studies
students to be exploring Laurel Creek, or for the science barbecue.
A good day, though, to step in out of the drizzle and watch a
performance of "Single and Sexy" in the Theatre of the Arts --
it's free, today at 11 a.m., 2:30 and 4 p.m.
A good day, also, for the Renison College chapel service at 4 p.m.
And tonight, for those who aren't taking part in the great Scunt event,
there's a triple bill at Federation Hall. The
Federation
of Students Board of Entertainment, BEnt, presents "Odds",
"Treble Charger", and (I'm not making it up, you know), "The Rainbow
Butt Monkeys".
Registration continues too
Today is registration day for mathematics students (in the morning)
and applied health sciences students (in the afternoon). And students
from all faculties who didn't quite make it earlier in the week are
due to register any time tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the small
gym of the Physical Activities Complex. Late fees start after tomorrow:
$10 for the first day, $3 each additional day. If you haven't
registered by October 31, you're out of luck altogether.
Faculty development days begin
A session on "Undergraduate Teaching and Learning at Waterloo" begins
Faculty Development Days this morning, followed by a couple of more
technical sessions -- "Ideas for Your Class" and "Evaluating Writing
Assignments". At 2:30 today, in Davis Centre 1302, comes the annual
fall panel on "Balancing Teaching, Research and Personal Lives". Faculty
Development Days continue tomorrow.
Also running both days is the Instructional Multimedia Fair in Davis
Centre 1301. Everybody's welcome.
People are being consulted
As the
Commission on Institutional Planning continues its work, two of its working
groups will be holding public meetings in the next few days to ask for
opinions from students, faculty and staff:
- The working group on human resources has a meeting next Wednesday,
September 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of
the Student Life Centre. Under discussion: such issues as balancing
workloads, salary and benefit packages, development and training, and
merit and performance evaluation.
- The University Computing Committee has a meeting Thursday, September
21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Arts Lecture room 116. Wanted: comments on
the planned revision of the
University
Computing Directions Statement
Notes from here and there
- While I wasn't looking, the soccer season started. Don't have any
scores yet, but the Warriors played Durham College on Tuesday and the
Athenas played York University yesterday. And today at 1 p.m., the
Warriors host Conestoga College in an exhibition game on the north
campus. Spectators are welcome, of course, free.
- You might think that filing your up-to-date address with the
registrar's office is enough, but no. The UW library doesn't get
updated address information; if you're going to be using the library,
you need to notify the library of your current address, which you can
do at any circulation desk. The address on file with the library is
the one to which recall notices and other library mail will be sent.
- A series of export training seminars, called Global
Connections, will be held on campus this fall. The series, covering
opportunities for careers in international business, has been a success
several times in the past; this fall's series starts September 15. An
information sesson will be held today at 4:30 p.m. in Davis Centre
room 1302, and repeated next Wednesday, September 13, at 4:30 in
DC room 1304. Information: the co-op and career services department
at 888-4026.
- The walkways around the Dana Porter Library and the Arts Lecture
Hall will be used for orientation chariot races today from about
noon to 1:30 and tomorrow from 3 to 4 p.m. Advice from safety director
Kevin Stewart: "Please arrange your schedules so that your vehicles
are not in this area at these times."
- Because of late cancellations, the Village residences
currently have vacancies for three
first year female students (double room and interconnecting room
accommodation). Anyone interested should contact Barb Heppler at ext. 3705.
And, we have a winner
Actually, five winners -- first-year students who accepted the
invitation in yesterday's Bulletin to drop me a note by e-mail and
receive a small prize. I was pleased to hear from, and welcome as
Daily Bulletin readers, Marta Poterski, Todd Bowman, Neil DeBoni,
Auriel Manolson, and William Lewis. "I just set up my Watstar
account five minutes ago," one of them told me; glad your computing
priorities include this Bulletin!
