Xerox partnership is launched
The ceremonies were held yesterday afternoon at a Mississauga high
school to launch the Xerox Co-op Teaching Internships Program. Says
a news release: "The program will place 40 UW co-operative education
(work-term) students (four per school term for five years) in teaching
internships with various Ontario school boards. The first student
interns started their teaching terms in September with the Peel, Muskoka
and Hamilton-Wentworth boards of education. Each UW intern will work
with students and staff to develop the kinds of computer-based information
technology skills needed in this rapidly changing world. The students
will show teachers how to integrate information technology into
their classrooms, help design curriculum and/or teach students as
part of their internships."
The program is co-sponsored by UW,
Xerox Canada and the school boards.
United Way gets a boost
Halfway through the on-campus campaign for the
United Way, givings
are halfway to the target, campaign chair Helen Kilbride said this
morning. The goal from faculty, staff and friends: $160,000.
The United Way got a $5,000 boost this morning when Unit 247 of
the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada presented a cheque
for that amount. It's the second year in a row that the
Kitchener-based veterans' group has made a big contribution to
UW's part of the United Way campaign.
Another boost should come tomorrow when financial services, one of UW's
biggest and liveliest staff departments, holds United Way Day. On
the program: dress-down day, a hot dog and chili lunch, a book sale, a jelly
bean guessing contest, baked goods for sale and a fashion accessories
party.
Board executive meets today
The executive committee of the UW board of governors meets today,
at 3:30 p.m. in Needles Hall room 3004. The meeting will prepare the
agenda for the full board meeting scheduled for Hallowe'en.
Among the issues: the current year's budget and the prospect for next
year's budget, of course. Also, proposed changes to the faculty and
staff health benefit plan; reports on how UW is doing to meet government
requests for "accountability" of various sorts; statistics on research
grants and contracts in the past year. And the agenda for this afternoon
raises the possibility of a special board meeting in December,
presumbly to deal with the looming financial crisis. Usually the board
of governors meets four times a year, in February, April, June and
October.
Testing the fire alarms
In the wake of the recent Davis Centre fire, there will be a test of
fire alarms and smoke evacuation fans in that building in the early
hours of tomorrow, the plant operations department warns. Watch and
listen for action between 6 and 7:30 a.m. "This will not affect
electrical services," a memo notes.
Also on Simchas Torah
Employer interviews continue for winter term
co-op jobs. Today's the
last day of interviews for chartered accounting jobs.
The drama department's production of "A Doll's House" runs tomorrow
through Saturday in the Theatre of the Arts.
