Talking about funding cuts
One department after another has been holding meetings to talk about
the prospects of big cuts to UW's income, and how activities and
spending might be trimmed by 7 or 10 per cent or more in the next year
or two. Next department to hold such a meeting is graphic services,
which has a staff meeting scheduled for late today.
As a result, most of the copy centres will be closed from 4 p.m. today,
including those in Humanities, Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental
Studies and the Dana Porter Library (the latter two will reopen at 6).
The copy centre in the Davis Centre, and Graphics Express in South
Campus Hall, will remain open.
The executive council budget committee is huddling this morning, even as
I write this Bulletin, to continue looking at how UW will face the
expected budget reductions. There's still no firm information about the
size and timing of the cuts, though. In this morning's Gazette I have
a report on comments made by Elizabeth Witmer, who represents Waterloo
North in the Ontario legislature and sits in premier Mike Harris's
inner cabinet. She told me that she's
a sturdy supporter of universities, but she held
out no hope that there will not be multi-million dollar reductions in
grants.
What's happening today
- Graduate Recruitment Fair '95 runs from 10 to 3:30 at the Kitchener
Memorial Auditorium. It's co-sponsored by the career centres at UW,
Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Guelph and Conestoga
College.
- The mature student services office sponsors its annual reception
from 4 to 6 p.m. in Humanities room 373.
- A public
tour of the observatory atop the Physics building starts tonight at
8:30, preceded by a slide show on the solar system at 8 p.m. in
Physics room 308. Everybody's welcome.
What's happening tomorrow
- "The Great Debate" is promised for 12 noon tomorrow in the Theatre
of the Arts. Not sure who's on which side, but the issue is "Is Gender
Dead?" and the participants are Sally Gunz of accounting, Michael Higgins
of English and St. Jerome's College, Randy Harris of English and Barbara
Bulman-Fleming of psychology. The event is sponsored by the arts alumni
group and the Arts Student Union. And is gender dead? "Only in the
university," implying "only in the ivory tower", could such a question
be asked, a scornful poster to uw.general said last week. But maybe it's
more complicated than it looks. . . .
- The women in mathematics committee presents a talk on "mathematics
in the art of
M. C. Escher", tomorrow at
3:00 in Math and Computer room 5158. The speaker is Doris Schattenschneider of
Moravian College in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. Says the committee: "This lecture will be of interest to
mathematicians and others; all are welcome, especially undergraduate
students."
And that's about it
. . . on Yom Kippur; on a grayish wettish morning; on the day after the
O. J.
Simpson verdict.
