For Americans in our midst
Happy Thanksgiving Day!
Sorry you've had to miss the
Macy's
parade, not to mention the turkey.
(The only turkey on UW's menus today, as far as I can see, is
turkey noodle soup in the Village cafeterias, and that's not
quite the same thing.)
Most American campuses are closed now for a very long weekend. "In
the city of Ann Arbor, at least on Thanksgiving, it becomes somewhat of a
ghost town," says a University of Michigan police spokesman,
quoted yesterday in the
Michigan
Daily.
Overnight hockey score
Warriors 8, Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks 3. The
athletics department posts other scores
through
UWinfo on a weekly basis.
Blood donor clinic planned
A Red Cross blood donor clinic is scheduled for Monday, November 27,
from noon to 4 p.m. in the Student Life Centre. "We need
volunteers," writes math student Lisa Ballinger, "to serve
refreshments, supervise donors, etc. . . . people who can work anytime
from 12:00 to 5:00 -- standard shifts are 2 1/2 hours, but we'll
take whatever we can get!" Anyone interested can e-mail Ballinger
at lcballin@undergrad.math. And if you can't volunteer to help, maybe
you can show up to give blood on Monday afternoon.
Breast cancer is the issue
Breast
Cancer Awareness Week continues, today with a noon-hour seminar on
"Nutrition and Its Relationship to Cancer". The event is sponsored by
UW's Campus Health Initiatives Project and the Federation of Students.
The speaker is Sandra Wildfong of the Canadian Cancer Society; she'll
be talking at 12 noon in Student Life Centre room 2134.
Also in the SLC today: Wendy Benson of Grand River Hospital will be
on hand with displays "on the topics of breast cancer, cervical
cancer, how to do breast self-examinations and even interesting topics
for men".
The great November craft show
Today and tomorrow, the UW
staff
association holds its second annual craft sale. It'll be in
operation 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Davis Centre room 1301.
More than 30 staff members -- active and retired -- will be selling
baked goods, jewellery, stained glass, knitting, pillows, lingerie bags,
carvings, flower arrangements, paper dolls, pottery, candles, and
just a few other things, organizers say. Other features: 10 per cent of
proceeds go to UW's senate scholarship fund; gift wrapping is
available; there will be a prize raffle.
Also happening this day
The drama department's "Chicago" opened in the Theatre of the Arts
last night. Haven't heard any audience comments yet, though the
grapevine says the invitation-only preview on Tuesday night was
enjoyed by those who were on hand. The lively musical continues
tonight through Saturday.
A couple of other plays are also going on:
- The Humanities Theatre has two performances of "Tales of
Beatrix Potter" scheduled today and two tomorrow -- watch for
school buses on the ring road.
- "Power Play", the free 40-minute show about harassment in the
workplace, has two performances today, at 11:30 in Engineering
Lecture Hall room 112 and at 5:30 in the Village II cafeteria.
