Presenting . . . Power Play
Nine performances are scheduled this week of a 40-minute drama about
sexual harassment. "Power Play" was developed at UW on the model of the
orientation week play "Single and Sexy", and this week's revival is being
sponsored by half a dozen UW departments and groups with funding from the
personal safety committee.
Everybody's welcome, admission is free, and the play is -- according to
a flyer that appeared late last week -- "of special interest to anyone
who has ever had a job!" That especially includes co-op students.
It has a cast of four, and is directed by Mark McGrinder.
Performances: today at noon in the great hall of the Student Life Centre,
at 5:15 p.m. in the Renison College cafeteria. Tuesday at 12 noon in the
Environmental Studies courtyard, 6:30 p.m. in Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's
College. Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. in the Math and Computer "comfy lounge",
5:30 p.m. in the Village I green cafeteria. Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in
Engineering Lecture room 112, 5:30 p.m. in the Village II cafteria.
Friday at 12 noon in Needles Hall room 3004.
Winter schedules available
Winter term schedules and timetables will be available beginning today.
Students who will be here in the January-to-April term can pick up
their papers from the registrar's office in Needles Hall between 9 a.m.
and 4 p.m. any day.
On-line drop and add will be available for arts and environmental
studies students at the drop-add window across from the registrar's office
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Complete course listings, including times offered, enrollment numbers and
instructor's name, are available in paper form in undergraduate offices or
on UWinfo
under "Calendars, courses and examinations".
On the agenda tonight
UW's senate, the senior academic governing body of the university, meets
tonight at 7:30 in Needles Hall room 3001 to talk about tenure, course
changes, faculty appointments, the 1996-97 calendar, student discipline
and all the other things for which senate is responsible.
Some meetings, some sales
Brief notes on Sir Wilfrid Laurier's birthday:
- Breast
Cancer Awareness Week begins today, and is being marked with displays
and some special activities in the Student Life Centre, sponsored by
the health services department and the newly-formed
Campus
Health Initiatives Project.
- The University Faculty & Staff (Waterloo) Credit Union Ltd. holds
a special general meeting tomorrow at 12 noon in Davis Centre room
1304. Members are being asked to call the credit union office at
ext. 3574 to confirm that they can be there to help make up a quorum.
- The Hildegard Marsden Co-operative Day Nursery, based on UW's
north campus, sponsors a Christmas craft and toy sale that runs
today through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., in the "fishbowl"
lounge just off the great hall of the Davis Centre.
- The UW
bookstore will present a "Professional
Trade Reference Bookfair" Tuesday and Wednesday in the South Campus
Hall concourse. Several major publishers will have
representatives on hand; there will be giveaways and a raffle for
prizes, says Hank Ackema of the bookstore staff.
- Speaking at the Kitchener Public Library, at noon today, is
Eric Haldenby, director of UW's school of
architecture. His topic: "Exploring Cultural Sites". It's part of a
regular Monday series of talks by UW and Wilfrid Laurier University
faculty.
What do you do if . . . ?
"Ethics in the Co-op Workplace" is a one-hour session that starts
at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon (in Davis Centre room 1351). Speakers are
Sally Gunz of the UW school of accountancy, who recently finished a
term as chair of the university's ethics committee, and Matt Erickson,
coordinator
of ethical behaviour and human rights.
What's it about? "You witness hiring practices by your co-op employer which
you think are contrary to the Human Rights Code. What do you do? Your
supervisor asks you to sign, as bona fide, test results with artificially
inflated figures. What do you do? A colleague asks you to cover for him and
tell just a little white lie to your supervisor. What do you do?" Tough
questions. Tomorrow: maybe no answers, but some discussion.
The community wants help
The local Volunteer Action Centre continues to have opportunities for
people who'd like to make themselves useful. Wanted at present, for
example: "volunteers to raise funds for international
development" (listing 185-391) and "a visitor for a woman who is
recovering from cancer surgery", someone who "can provide nurturing
and enjoy discussing spiritual issues" (listing 027-1383). The VAC
can be reached at 742-8610.
