A manifestation of evil
A speaker from St. Clement's Roman Catholic church in Toronto will be
at UW tonight to speak about
cults. He is St. Clair McEvenue, and
the title of his talk is "Cults: A Manifestation of Evil -- The Works
of the Devil". McEvenue, who says he has studied cults and "their
devastating effects on their victims" for 20 years, is here under the
sponsorship of a local discussion group called Leoknights. His talk will
begin at 7 p.m. in Siegfried Hall of St. Jerome's College.
About the chilly climate
Alison Wylie, one of the authors of
Breaking Anonymity: The Chilly Climate for Women Faculty, will
be speaking at Wilfrid Laurier University tonight under the sponsorship
of WLU Press, which has just published that book.
"Chilly climate" has become the conventional phrase for
an atmosphere in
universities that isn't comfortable for women. In the new book, a
group of women faculty, mostly from the University of Western Ontario,
discuss how low the temperatures are these days. Wylie is
a
professor of anthropology at Western.
Her talk starts at 8 p.m. tonight in WLU's Paul Martin Centre.
Announcements from here and there
- Health
services has a seminar set for tomorrow about vegetarianism. Says a
flyer: "This is a basic seminar for those interested in becoming a
vegetarian and don't know
where to begin or how
to eat a
healthy vegetarian diet. . . . Bring your lunch and your
questions." The talk starts at 12:30 tomorrow in Health Services
room 127; you can preregister by calling ext. 2424.
- The
staff
association still has spaces on its November 25 bus trip to
Dixie Value Mall and Square One. Price: $12 for the day. The
association office has tickets: phone ext. 3566, e-mail staffasc@watserv1.
- Waste Reduction Week continues, and today is Composting Day, says
Patti Cook, UW's coordinator of
waste
management. A truly appealing invitation: "See four years' worth of
yard waste, and its state of decomposition, behind the
Optometry building!" Tomorrow: Zero Garbage Day.
- The Village I cafeteria will be closed from 3 p.m. today because
of the Warden's Dinner -- a once-a-term special event hosted by the
Warden of Residences. Village residents can use their cards instead at
other on-campus
food
services outlets (Village 2, the Village Grill, Brubaker's,
Bon Appetit in the Davis Centre) or the
off-campus restaurants that accept the WatCard, including Casey's,
East Side Mario's, Pizza Pizza, and KFC delivery.
- The European Roundtable series on the transformation of the
economy and society today features threats and opportunities for
natural heritage conservation. The event's sponsored by the
Heritage
Resources Centre and starts at 3:30 in Environmental Studies I
room 221.
Looking ahead to Homecoming
With this weekend's
Homecoming
events rushing up at us, Lynne Sosnowski of the Federation of Students
has sent out a plea for participants:
We need volunteers to do set-up work, decorate, run casino games,
and more. Shifts range from 1 1/2 hours to 4 or more, and there's
work to be done Thursday, Friday, Saturday, daytime or evening. In
other words, we have something that can fit your schedule. Volunteers
receive free admission to the venue on the night you work; a limited edition
souvenir T-shirt (who doesn't want their own tuxedo?); a couple of
complimentary malt beverages; a special Alumni Affairs T-shirt for
anyone who works more than six hours total on Homecoming; events
experience; fun, fun, fun; our undying gratitude!
She can be reached at ext. 6338 ("or come on down to SLC 1102 and
sign up on the sheets on my door").
So what's happening at Homecoming? Oh, tailgate pubs at the Bombshelter,
the Big Tent casino at Federation Hall, the applied health sciences
fun run around the ring road, the Naismith
basketball
tournament, and a few other things. The front page of tomorrow's
Gazette tells the whole story.
