If you don't give us a holiday . . .

Anybody else remember the old kids' rhyme? Well, the Queen's Birthday is upon us. Victoria Day (formerly Empire Day) will be marked this coming Monday, May 22. UW classes will be cancelled, offices will be closed, and nearly all staff and faculty get the day off.

The libraries will be closed Monday, open with reduced hours Saturday and Sunday. Graphics Express will be open Saturday, but closed Sunday and Monday. The Customer Support Centre in the department of computing services will also be open Saturday (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.) but closed Sunday and Monday.

Advice from computing services: "If you notice an outage of the campus computer network or any major DCS-maintained computing facility during this period, you can report it by telephoning the DCS HelpDesk at 888-4839. If the outage has a severe impact on the university computing environment and the appropriate facility-support personnel can be contacted, the problem will be addressed; otherwise, it will be pursued Tuesday morning."

The UW police will be on duty throughout the weekend as usual -- phone 888-4911 (from UW extension phones, ext. 4911). The Campus Centre, soon to be Student Life Centre, is open 24 hours a day. Maintenance emergencies can reported, 24 hours a day, to the plant operations department at ext. 3793.

Federation Hall says it's closed for renovations, and will reopen on Thursday of next week.

A few things are happening

Volunteers and organizers for UW's annual fund are having a noontime picnic today at the development and alumni affairs office in South Campus Hall.

"Dimensions in Dance", a local dance studio, has three performances of its year-end show set for the Humanities Theatre: at 1:30 and 7:30 Saturday, and 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Some 130 delegates for the Ontario Folk Dance Camp are arriving at the Village 2 conference centre today. That's the only conference happening over the long weekend. Surface Canada '95, a major conference hosted by surface researchers in UW's chemistry department, will be starting Wednesday.

Jobs keep arriving in co-op

Job posting #3 for the fall work term goes up this morning in the co-op education department. It expires Monday at 8 p.m. More listings will go up every couple of days until the beginning of employer interviews on May 31.

So let's call it summer

Ah yes, the Victoria Day weekend -- season for opening cottages, planting gardens, watching the Blue Jays, holding one's breath as the Maple Leafs try to stay in the playoffs, and being sure there's a designated driver at the barbecue. The weather forecast is promising . . . so a happy long weekend to all!
